Ultimate Breaks & Beats Vol 6

LP (Item 9052) Street Beat, 1970s/1980s — Condition: Very Good-
Essential breaks from the early years of hip hop – volume 6 in the now-legendary Ultimate Breaks series! This one has the light blue cover, and the tracks here are all great – and include "Sing A Simple Song" by Please, "2001" by Cecil Holmes & The Black Motion Picture Experience, "Cold Sweat" by James Brown, "Scratchin" by Magic Disco Band, "Son Of Scorpio" by Dennis Coffey, "Down On The Avenue" by Fat Larry's Band, and "I Like Funky Music" by Uncle Louie, with the first 6 featuring the now well known Ultimate B & B extended break edits!  © 1996-2023, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Very Good - (minus)

  • Vinyl may be dirty, and can lack a fair amount of luster.
  • Vinyl can have a number of marks, either in clusters or smaller amounts, but deeper.
  • This is the kind of record that you'd buy to play, but not because it looked that great. Still, the flaws should be mostly cosmetic, with nothing too deep that would ruin the overall record.
  • Examples include a record that has been kept for a while in a cover without the paper sleeve, or heavily played by a previous owner and has some marks across the surface. The record should play okay, though probably with surface noise.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Even into its 20s, the Ultimate Breaks series is still going strong – serving up a bunch of must-have funk tracks that not only form the blueprint for hip hop in the 80s, but which also stand nicely on their own! The selection is very hard and chunky on this one – lots of tracks that ... LP, Vinyl record album
Chess/Mercury (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. Very Good+
A really great UK collection – one that brings together some very hip Chess Records material from the late 60s and early 70s, mostly spun together as if you were hearing a British soul DJ serve the tracks up in a club! There's lots of great obscure material here – making the set a ... LP, Vinyl record album

Maybe the coolest entry so far in this excellent series – and proof that the Mr Bongo label has gone much farther in recent years than it ever did in the past! Harry Nilsson

Aerial Ballet
RCA, 1968. Very Good+
Beautiful early work from the great Harry Nilsson – and exactly the kind of record that set him apart right from the start! Leslie West

Mountain
Windfall, 1969. Very Good+
Leslie West is a mountain of a man – and although his greatest fame may have been in the group Mountain, this initial solo set has all the power of that famous group – and maybe a leaner, meaner sound overall! West is clearly working in the power trio style that was emerging from the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Sonny Fortune

Serengeti Minstrel
Atlantic, 1977. Near Mint-
A great one from Sonny Fortune – done with the fusiony sound he was working so well with at the time, and still filled with a tight conception and an incredible group of musicians who bring depth and deliver some really great solos! One of Gal Costa's mellow mainstream sides from the 80s – hardly the sort of work you might have imagined during the heady Tropicalia years, yet still very much the top of the heap for MPB at the time!
