Dexter Gordon — Tokyo 1975 (180 gram pressing) ... LP 18.99

Dexter Gordon in Tokyo, but working strongly with a lineup that helped him make some of his best 70s recordings in Europe – that wonderful quartet with Kenny Drew on piano, Niels Henning Orsted Pedersen on bass, and Albert Tootie Heath on drums! The format is familiar, and Dex is right on the money – spinning out those wonderfully strong, richly imaginative solos that make his Copenhagen material so strong over the years – that special Gordon way of taking a familiar tune, and opening it up completely in the space of his extended solo! Titles include Gordon's classic "Fried Bananas" – plus "Misty", "Days Of Wine & Roses", and "Jelly Jelly Jelly". CD features two bonus tracks – "Rhythm A Ning", recorded with the same group, but with Espen Rud on drums in 1973 – and "Old Folks", recorded with an unusual quartet that features Ronnie Mathews on piano, Stafford James on bass, and Louis Hayes on drums.  © 1996-2019, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We have only one grade for non-new CDs at Dusty Groove — "Used CD". This grade is somewhat all-encompassing, but we choose it because we try to offer Used CDs in the best shape possible.

When you purchase a Used CD you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks, the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves), and the booklet to be in good shape. Used CDs may show some signs of use but if there are significant details or defects we will list them underneath the item — just like we do with LPs — so look there for notes on cutout marks, stickers, promo stamps or other details.

All of our Used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. If you purchase a Used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly — and if it does not, then you may return it for a full refund.

Steeplechase (Denmark), 1974. Used
A standout 70s set from Dexter Gordon – one that's a bit tighter than some of his longer-blown dates from overseas – and which almost sparkles with the same power as his 60s albums on Blue Note! The group here is nice and tight – with Kenny Drew on piano, Niels Henning Orsted ... CD

The birth of genius – a big early moment for Dexter Gordon, especially has he works here in his famous jazz tenor "chase" with Wardell Gray! CD
Blue Note (Japan), 1963. Used
One of our favorite Dexter Gordon sessions for Blue Note – and a unique album that's one of the first to illustrate his growing role in the European jazz scene! The group's a quartet – which let's Dex stand out front with plenty of space for marvelous tenor work – and it features ... CD
Jazzland/OJC, 1960. Used
An excellent album by Dexter Gordon – his first after a number of years spent without recording in the late 50s, and one that marked a real return to serious growth as a player during the 60s! The album takes the same approach as Dexter's soon to be recorded Blue Note classics – ... CD

Tower Of Power!
Prestige/OJC, 1969. Used
Dexter Gordon certainly was a tower of power by this point – as his lengthy 60s stay in Europe helped him to work work work, and season his playing considerably – to a point at which he emerged as a masterful soloist far beyond the limits of his early bop recordings! This session ... CD
Blue Note, 1962. Used
Seminal stuff – and one of Dexter Gordon's excellent Blue Note sessions with pianist Sonny Clark! Sonny's in fine fine form for the record, and in our opinion, he seems to be the most relaxed and inventive when accompanying Dexter Gordon – even over other Blue Note horn players, and ... CD

Brothers
Prestige, 1949/1952. Used
A classic Prestige LP that compiles earlier sides by Getz – four tunes from a 1949 session recorded under Stan Getz & His Four Brothers, with Zoot Sims, Al Cohn, Allen Eager, and Brew Moore – all blowing with Getz in a real "brothers-like" sax section sound. The remaining ... CD

Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers

At The Cafe Bohemia Volume 2 (with bonus tracks)
Blue Note, Late 50s. Used
Classic early set featuring the Jazz Messengers back when the group still included Horace Silver, Hank Mobley, and Kenny Dorham. Hard hard hard bop, cracklin' with energy, and a great example of the kind of playing that made the group an instant success. Tracks on this second volume include " ... CD
