Sweet 80s sounds from the legendary Kool & The Gang – one of the key classics from the second chapter of the group – when their lineup and sound were a lot leaner than before, and they managed to cross over big to a much wider audience than before! The upbeat cuts show that the group were still kings of the funky dancefloor – and the mellower ones are equally great too – showing a rising ballad style that proved to be the group's big crossover card at the time – a way of putting over a laidback track, but with plenty of soul. This approach is heard to great effect on the album's great single "Cherish" – and other tracks include "Bad Woman", "Surrender", "Emergency", "Misled", "Fresh", and "You Are The One".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We have only one grade for non-new CDs at Dusty Groove — "Used CD". This grade is somewhat all-encompassing, but we choose it because we try to offer Used CDs in the best shape possible.

When you purchase a Used CD you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks, the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves), and the booklet to be in good shape. Used CDs may show some signs of use but if there are significant details or defects we will list them underneath the item — just like we do with LPs — so look there for notes on cutout marks, stickers, promo stamps or other details.

All of our Used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. If you purchase a Used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly — and if it does not, then you may return it for a full refund.

Kool & The Gang

Everybody's Dancin'
De-Lite/PTG (Netherlands), 1978. Used
Kool & The Gang sounding super-tight, but mighty right as well – a groove that still has all the great jazz elements of their mid 70s records, but which also has them picking up the bassy bottom a bit more too! The sound is not nearly as slick as their 80s hits – and instead still ... CD

Kool & The Gang

Still Kool
New Door, 2007. Used 2 CDs
Sure, it's not the classic years of the 70s, but Kool & The Gang sound surprisingly great here on this recent set – grooving in a well-done, tightly-crafted way that may not exactly be early 70s funk, but which is still right up there with some of their later, mellower work! The rhythms ... CD
Polydor/Universal, 1968. Used
James Brown's great second album recorded live at the Apollo Theater in Harlem – a set we like even better than the first famous volume – because it's much more stretched-out, harder-hitting, and full of fire! You'd be hard pressed to find a better example of Brown's showmanship on ... CD

Booker T & Priscilla Jones

Chronicles (Japanese paper sleeve edition)
A&M/Universal (Japan), 1973. Used
Booker T's definitely into a great new groove here – one that really extrapolates his Memphis roots through the haze of early 70s California – coming up with some wonderful sounds along the way! There's a definite A&M vibe to the record – that mix of rootsy modes and hipster ... CD

Gap Band

Gap Band III
Mercury/Universal (Japan), 1980. Used
A great one from the Gap Band – funky gems and sinister groovers – the best of both worlds for the group! Tunes like "Burn Rubber On Me (When You Want To Hurt Me)" and "Humpin" packed 80s dance floors for good reason, and put the band in steady rotation, while ... CD

Buddy Miles

Them Changes
Mercury/Universal (UK), 1970. Used
A landmark album of crossover funk – fuzzed out rock, soul, and jazzy licks all coming into play together – held totally tight by drummer Buddy Miles, the undisputed king of his scene! Buddy's drums are super-heavy – holding down his Freedom Express group with a heavy jazz-rock ... CD

Incredible Bongo Band

Bongo Rock (with bonus tracks)
Pride/Universal (Japan), Early 70s. Used
A landmark album that is perhaps the single most influential beat source in hip hop! The record was the brainchild of bongo player Michael Viner – who also happened to be running the Pride subsidiary of MGM at the time. Viner's got a meeeeeean touch on the bongo, hitting it hard and funky ... CD

Smokey Robinson

Where There's Smoke
Motown/Universal, 1979. Used
Smooth Smokey at the end of the 70s – an album that has him moving from the Quiet Storm sound into the more hook-based style that would earn him a fair bit of hits in the 80s! The Robinson vocal approach is always sweet, warm, and mellow on the set – especially on the album's more ... CD
A&M/Universal (Japan), 1972. Used
Much mellower than the previous duet effort from Booker T & Priscilla Jones – a set that almost echoes Book's Memphis roots, but in ways that are different than the familiar soul of Stax! There's lots of sweet organ lines in the instrumentation – but they're played with a style ... CD
