Tjader Plays Mambo (10 inch LP)

LP (Item 897278) Fantasy, Late 50s — Condition: Very Good-

Classic 50s west coast Latin grooves – played by Cal and a tasty Bay Area combo that includes Benny Velarde on timbales and conga, Manuel Duran on piano, and Carlos Duran on bass! The tracks are short, but have a tight group feel – really driving in a nicely rhythmic mode, with some strong breakaway solos by Cal on vibes. The mix of vibes and percussion is great – and titles include "Mambo Macumba", "It Ain't Necessarily So", and "Wachi Wara", the original version of "Soul Sauce"!  © 1996-2019, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Blue vinyl promo pressing. NOTE: There's groove damage right at the start of the record, which causes a skip – the rest is actually pretty nice. Cover has "sample" on the front – and some light staining on the edges.)

Very Good - (minus)

  • Vinyl may be dirty, and can lack a fair amount of luster.
  • Vinyl can have a number of marks, either in clusters or smaller amounts, but deeper.
  • This is the kind of record that you'd buy to play, but not because it looked that great. Still, the flaws should be mostly cosmetic, with nothing too deep that would ruin the overall record.
  • Examples include a record that has been kept for a while in a cover without the paper sleeve, or heavily played by a previous owner and has some marks across the surface. The record should play okay, though probably with surface noise.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Unlike the mellower Breeze from the East LP (another Tjader "eastern" session), this one's got some very lively Latiny stuff – despite the orientalist theme of the LP. There's a monster version of Horace Silver's "Tokyo Blues", plus takes of Lalo Schifrin's "The ... LP, Vinyl record album

Intimacy Of The Blues
Fantasy, 1967/1970. Sealed
A slightly smaller take on the Ellington sound – but one that's still a bit fuller than you might guess from the "Small Bands" on the cover! There's definitely a more intimate feel here than usual – especially given the size of ensembles Duke was working with in the 60s ... LP, Vinyl record album

Everybody Come On Out
Fantasy, 1976. Very Good+ Gatefold
Sweet, smooth, and soulful – a heck of a great album from Stanley Turrentine, and one that's recorded in a mode that steps off nicely from his best work at CTI!
