Oh Baby It's Good/Hi

7-inch (Item 892711) Brougham, Mid 70s — Condition: Near Mint-

...

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Curtom, 1974. Very Good-
Sweet and mellow soul from Chicago – two cuts written, arranged, and produced by Leroy Hutson – perfect for the style of the Natural Four! "Love That Really Counts" builds slow and warm with some nice electric piano – and "Love's Society" is even better, ... 7-inch, Vinyl record

Horse/Love Is All Right
Phil-LA Of Soul, Late 60s. Very Good-
A classic! "The Horse" is a great 60s instrumental groover that virtually set the tone for the next 10 years of brass instrumentation in soul music! The cut's got a raw TSU Tornadoes or Bar-Kays kind of feel, with a horn line right up front, in a catchy rolling groove that never quits! 7-inch, Vinyl record
Mayfield, Late 60s. Good+
Great lost soul from Chicago! Both cuts were written and produced by Curtis Mayfield – and "You're Really Something Sadie" is a total winner, with a great hook, and excellent vocals from Marvin, who cracks slightly in the emotional parts, kind of like Curtis. The track's also got ... 7-inch, Vinyl record
Groovesville, Late 60s. Very Good-
Does JJ Barnes ever miss? Certainly not here, as both tracks are excellent! "Now That I Got You Back" has this amazing soaring groove – perfect underground Detroit, and perfect for JJ, whose vocals infuse the song with all the joy it should have! "Forgive Me" is a great ... 7-inch, Vinyl record
Love, Late 60s. Good+
An obscure one with arrangements by Richard Evans. "After Dark In The Ghetto" is partially sung, partially spoken – in the mode of hipster inner city lonely songs, like the 50s jazz work of Langston Hughes, Frank Minion, and perhaps Babs Gonzales. "When You Say You're ... 7-inch, Vinyl record
Trans World Sound, Late 60s. Very Good-
Wonderful group soul from Chicago – and the kind of single that makes us wonder why these guys didn't get huge! "Miss You Baby" is a sweet midtempo number with some great harmonies – a bit of a rasp and step, along the lines of the early Notations or the Sheppards – and ... 7-inch, Vinyl record
Ric Tic, Late 60s. Very Good-
If anyone ever asks you why JJ Barnes is so great, play them this single, and they'll find out why! Both tracks are incredible – snapping Detroit soul with a rougher, earthier edge than Motown ever had – but done to perfection by JJ. If we had to pick a favorite, it would be "I ... 7-inch, Vinyl record

Chicken/I Love You
Uni, Late 60s. Good+
Ooooo-weeeee! After serving up "The Duck", a northern soul classic, Jackie moves onto "The Chicken" – which is a stone funky single of its own! The track's got a massive groove – really heavy drums, super-dope wah wah guitar, and a snapping funky style that's more ... 7-inch, Vinyl record
