We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Eddie Palmieri
Barbaro, 1981. Near Mint-
One of the most sophisticated sessions by Eddie Palmieri from the time – and one of the most deeply emotive as well! Alongside the creative piano and jazz-bases sensibility you'd expect from Eddie, the album's also got a set of fuller arrangements as well – orchestrations that build ... LP, Vinyl record album
Tico, 1974. Sealed
Compilation of classic early stuff by Machito, back when Mario Bauza was playing trumpet, and acting as his music director. The band has a good hard sound, with lots of strong jazz soloing, and plays with a fire that's missing from a lot of his later recordings. Tracks include "Asia ... LP, Vinyl record album

A blend of soulful styles from the mighty Macondo! This self-titled set is pretty hip batch of tracks – sort of a mixture of early 70s LA Latin funk, with some lighter elements of Brazilian music, possibly added into the record by Claudio Slon, who produced the set for Sergio Mendes. Fania, 1989. Sealed
Ray Barretto's not looking too "irresistible" on the cover of this one – thanks to a too-white costume and sock-less espadrilles – but the record's still a great one, with a nicely jazzy vibe throughout! The album was Ray's last for Fania, but it's by no means a contract-fille ... LP, Vinyl record album

Tappan Zee, 1979. Very Good+ Gatefold
A great Bob James-directed session from Mongo Santamaria – and a set that takes the fusion-inflected Latin work he was doing on the Vaya label, and blends it with an even tighter, sharper CTI Records vibe! The approach is a bit like that combination of underground Latin and larger label ... LP, Vinyl record album
Capitol/Intuition, 1989. Near Mint-
An excellent session – very much in the mode of Eddie's groundbreaking work from the early 70s, when he was mixing together some incredibly complicated piano lines with newer styles of Latin jazz. The album's about half vocal, half instrumental – with a very strong jazz component that's ... LP, Vinyl record album

Arista Freedom, 1964/1975. Near Mint-
A seminal early moment from the legendary Albert Ayler – an important session recorded overseas in Copenhagen – where enthusiasm for Ayler's music caught fire more strongly than in the US! The group's got an edge that's maybe even sharper than some of Ayler's ESP material, but no less ... LP, Vinyl record album
Prestige, 1963. Near Mint-
Darkly brooding work from John Coltrane's early years as a leader on Prestige – a very unique little record that features twin baritone sax support from Pepper Adams and Cecil Payne! Both players are wonderfully hip here – more than enough to match Trane's unique musical vision for the ... LP, Vinyl record album
