We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

RCA, 1957. Very Good-
It's easy to cha cha when Tito Puente's in the house – especially when he's working in his near-perfect RCA mode of the late 50s! The tunes are nothing fancy, but the execution is sublime – tight Latin rhythms at the bottom, done in a way that's never too bombastic – topped with ... LP, Vinyl record album
Conjunto Batacha
Columbia, Early 60s. Very Good-
A very tasty little set from this 60s Mexican combo – a lively rhythmic group with lots of bass and percussion at the bottom of their groove, topped off by male harmony vocals on most numbers! There's some really jazzy piano that sets a mood that makes the album differ from other Latin sides ... LP, Vinyl record album

Watermelon Man!
Battle, 1962. Very Good
A seminal moment in the career of Mongo Santamaria – and probably the first record to show that he was destined for greatness! As you might guess from the title, the set features Mongo's key recording of Herbie Hancock's "Watermelon Man" – served up here in a sharp-edged ... LP, Vinyl record album
Columbia, Late 60s. Very Good
One of Mongo's best Columbia LPs, and a totally hard hitting live set recorded with a very strong Latin jazz feel! The group's got some of Mongo's best players ever – like Hubert Laws and Bobby Porcelli – and the album's got lots of hard horn solos, and a good good groove throughout. ... LP, Vinyl record album
Bobo Motion
Verve, 1967. Very Good+
Bobo Motion is groovy motion – heard here on one of Willie's best albums for Verve from the late 60s – a really unique blend of jazz, Latin, and soul-based rhythms! The set's even tighter than some of Willie's other Verve records – and like the classic Uno Dos Tres, it's got some ... LP, Vinyl record album
Tico, Late 50s. Good+
Despite the "for lovers" in the title, this is a fairly lively set of cha cha tracks by Tito Puente, with a feel that's in keeping with the best of his 50's work. Like the other Tico recordings, this record's got a harder sound than some of his RCA albums, and is much closer to the New ... LP, Vinyl record album
Tomorrow Is Here
Blue Note, 1977. Very Good
A really unique chapter in the career of percussionist Willie Bobo – a rare one-off album for Blue Note – done with a sweet Cali vibe all the way through! Together
Disco International, 1977. Sealed
Surprisingly nice album that has Tito Ramos and Tony Rojas reuniting in a crackling session of 70s salsa that mixes English and Spanish lyrics, both with the kind of soul that the band was famous for in the 60s. Tracks include "Hello My Love", "Los TNT", "La Mujer ... LP, Vinyl record album
My Musical Bouquet
20th Century, 1978. Very Good-
Late stuff – but one of the best Barry White-related albums from the 70s! The record has the Orchestra moving at a much slower pace than usual – perhaps in an answer to all the too-fast too-orchestrated disco that took a cue from Barry's earlier work – and the record bravely hits ... You Better Believe It!
Pacific Jazz, Early 60s. Very Good-
One of Gerald Wilson's first albums – and a groundbreaking set of big band tracks that taps the richly soulful talents of 60s LA!
