Fancy Pants (2LP version – with booklet)

LP (Item 885418) Judnell/Now Again, 1971 — Condition: Near Mint-
2LP
Some of the most righteous sounds we've ever heard from Houston legends The Lightmen – recorded at a time when the group was at their most spiritual, and very firmly following a cosmic path set down by drummer Bubbha Thomas! The music here owes nothing to the hippest sounds coming from the coastal cities – and even the undergrounds of Chicago and Detroit in the early 70s – and in fact, there's a vibe here that would be right at home with the Tribe Records spirit of the motor city, as the group balance their freewheeling inclinations with a nice sense of rhythm as well! Players include Doug Harris on some excellent soprano, tenor, and flute – plus Virgil Solomon on flute and alto, James Hensley on trumpet and light whistle, Joe Singleton on trombone, and Marshia Frazier on electric piano. Titles include "Sorrow Bitterness & Revolution", "Hope", "Blue Tip", "On The Road Home", "Song Of Praise", and "Ujimma".  © 1996-2022, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Includes the stereo and mono versions of the album, plus heavy booklet! Also includes download card – which may or may not still be valid.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Les McCann

Layers
Atlantic, 1973. Very Good+ Gatefold
This might well be the best album that Les McCann ever cut during the 70s! It's got some killer electric piano riffs, of the sort that are being sampled heavily today by the kids, and which are getting his music to a whole new af generation. The tracks have a tight spacey funk sound, and they don' ... LP, Vinyl record album

Quincy Jones

Mellow Madness
A&M, 1973. Very Good+
A really great, oft-overlooked album from the best period of Quincy Jones! This album is quite possibly Quincy's most farthest-reaching – as he works in an array of styles that really shows his growing genius in the studio – not just jazz and soundtrack modes, but more soul-based ones, ... Ornette Coleman

Twins
Atlantic, Late 50s/Early 60s. Near Mint-
A key album for any fan of classic Ornette Coleman – a 1971 Atlantic release that pulled together tracks from the late 50's and early 60's that didn't make it onto Ornette's earlier records for the label! Why these tracks weren't released at the time is a mystery to all, because the material ... LP, Vinyl record album
Columbia, 1970. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold
Four sides of long improvised grooves from Miles Davis – a set that's quite similar to the classic studio album Bitches Brew, but which captures the sound in more open live setting! Each track on each side is named "Wednesday Miles", "Thursday Miles", and so on – ... LP, Vinyl record album

Oliver Nelson

Images
Prestige, 1960/1976. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
Oliver Nelson never gets his due, and we can never understand why, because his talents as both an arranger and soloist are extremely strong. This nice 2 LP set brings together 2 albums that are bound to make a convert out of anyone who's been passing him up so far, and it shows a young Nelson in a ... LP, Vinyl record album

Dollar Brand (Abdullah Ibrahim)

Black Lightning
Chiaroscuro, 1976. Near Mint-
An album that was issued in the US, but which actually features excellent work that Abdullah Ibrahim/Dollar Brand recorded for the Gallo label in South Africa – the kind of edgier work that we often prefer next to some of his solo and trio material! The key force here is the horns – as ... LP, Vinyl record album
Tomato, 1978. Near Mint-
One of the most ambitious albums ever recorded by avant violinist Leroy Jenkins – a very politically-driven record that has even more power than some of his earlier works! Jenkins' vision is very sharp here – expressed brilliantly in the album's side-long title track, with help from ... LP, Vinyl record album

John Coltrane

Blue Train
Blue Note, 1957. Near Mint-
John Coltrane's classic – and only – recording as a leader for Blue Note! The album's no throwaway date, though – as it stands strongly with both Coltrane's other label work of the time, and with the best of the late 50s Blue Note scene – a time when the label was really ... LP, Vinyl record album

Vince Guaraldi

Oh Good Grief!
Warner, Late 60s. Very Good+
One of the coolest, grooviest albums that pianist Vince Guaraldi ever recorded – a set that's got the same Peanuts theme as his earlier dates for Fantasy Records, but which also features some sweet electric touches that only make things even better than before! In addition to his warmly ... LP, Vinyl record album

Laid Back

Keep Smiling
Sire, 1983. Near Mint-
It takes a record like this one to remind us just what a magical crossover time the post-disco, post-punk days of the early 80s could be! Take two white guys from Denmark – Tim Stahl and John Guldberg – give them a drum machine and some funky beats, and out comes the breakdance classic ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ken Nordine

Son Of Word Jazz
Dot, Late 50s. Near Mint-
Nice one! This is Ken Nordine's follow-up to his highly successful Word Jazz album, and it's another crazy batch of jazz-meets-beat poetry-meets-goofy stuff. Ken Nordine's wit is razor sharp as usual, and the tracks include "The Bullfighter", "Junk Man", "Looking At ... LP, Vinyl record album

Gil Scott-Heron

First Minute Of A New Day
Arista, 1975. Near Mint- Gatefold
Gil Scott Heron's first album for Arista – very much in the mellow soul jazz work of his legendary album on Strata East! The record features some wonderfully moody jazz backing that really marks a shift in Gil's style – never going too far over the top, but hitting a sweet groove that ... LP, Vinyl record album
