Where It All Begins

CD (Item 885274) Stax, 2011 — Condition: Used
$6.99 ...

CD

A really strong album from Lalah Hathaway – profoundly addressing her legacy on this second album for Stax by covering a Donny Hathaway classic and paying tribute to him with the album art – all the while standing up proudly as a soul music veteran with a proud legacy that's all her own! If you thought Lalah was going to go old school style on Where It All Begins – rest assured that this is contemporary soul music – though crafted with a timeless sensibility. There's some nicely thumping numbers and sweeter, more soaring jams – with Lalah's smoky voice carrying it all the way. Lalah's move to Stax continues to be a major creative win! Includes "Strong Woman", "Where It All Began", "My Everything", "Small Of My Back", "Always Love You", "This Could Be Love", Wrong Way", "I'm Coming Back" feat Rochelle Ferrell, "Dreamland", and a fresh take on the Donny Hathaway classic "You Were Meant For Me". 12 tracks in all.  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We have only one grade for non-new CDs at Dusty Groove — "Used CD". This grade is somewhat all-encompassing, but we choose it because we try to offer Used CDs in the best shape possible.

When you purchase a Used CD you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks, the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves), and the booklet to be in good shape. Used CDs may show some signs of use but if there are significant details or defects we will list them underneath the item — just like we do with LPs — so look there for notes on cutout marks, stickers, promo stamps or other details.

All of our Used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. If you purchase a Used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly — and if it does not, then you may return it for a full refund.

Lalah Hathaway
Virgin, 1990. Used
The first album from Donny Hathaway's soulful daughter – an album that began a legacy that's lasted plenty strongly on its own – even without such a great family pedigree! Lalah's got a nearly-classic style in her work that's a fresh departure from many other soul acts of this period ... CD

Congo Square
Stax, 2009. Used
Teena Marie on Stax Records – something we never thought we'd see, but which we're happy to applaud, given the strength of this set! Teena's arranging and producing herself here – and the record has some of the best tight soul modes of other recent sets in the Stax revival – an ... CD

Greatest Hit Singles
Stax, 1970s. Used
An album that pretty much needs no introduction, as it's largely evident from the title. Just ion case you were wondering though, this is quite a batch of heavy soul and protoypical funk. A dozen essential 70s R&B gems, as released on singles, including "Walk On By", "Do Your ... CD

Stax, Late 60s/Early 70s. Used
20 titles from Johnny's early big hit years at Stax – back when he was cracking the charts with his home-styled blusey soul tunes that just wouldn't quit! Plenty of nice numbers on here – including the huuuuge hit "Who's Makin' Love", plus "Love Bones", "I ... CD

Gil Scott-Heron

Best Of Gil Scott-Heron
Arista, 1984. Used
A nice best-of collection of Gil's work on Arista – issued in the 80s, with Gil looking terrible in a "Members Only" kind of way on the cover, and with the extra new track "Re-Ron", an electro track about Ronald Reagan! Still, there's more than enough nice moments – ... CD
