LP, Vinyl record album

A masterpiece – one of 2 crazy albums in which Woody Herman's late band meets the Cadet arrangements of Richard Evans. You might think the combination wouldn't work – Woody's big band flourishes meeting up with Evans' compressed soulful grooves – but gosh, the record is simply incredible, and it's one that we'd never part with in a million billion years! Worth it alone for the version of Edu Lobo's "Pontieo", but there's lots of other nice stuff – like "I Say A Little Prayer", "Hush", "Keep On Keepin On", and "Light My Fire". (Cover has a cutout notch, light wear, and a name in marker.)  © 1996-2017, Dusty Groove, Inc.

We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Capitol, Late 40s. Very Good
Great work from Woody's late 40s years on Capitol Records – a time when he was one of the few bigger bandleaders who was open to really new ideas – working here with an amazing range of players who include Stan Getz, Al Cohn, Zoot Sims, Gene Ammons, Jimmy Giuffre, Serge Chaloff, Phil ... Cadet, 1968. Very Good+
One of our favorite Ramsey Lewis albums of all time – an incredible reworking of tunes by The Beatles, done in collaboration with Cadet Records studio maestro Charles Stepney – who brings in some amazing arrangements and production styles to the record! The tunes are familiar, but the ... LP, Vinyl record album
Mellow Yellow
Cadet, 1967. Very Good
One of the great little organ combo albums that Odell Brown recorded with his crack group The Organ-Izers for Cadet. Lots of very groovy stuff, with Louis Satterfield on bass (before the Pharoahs and before Earth, Wind, & Fire), Curtis Prince on drums, Henry Gibson on congas, and Artee "Du ... Ray Bryant Touch
Cadet, 1967. Very Good
Simple stuff – but very nice! Ray's working here in a live trio setting – ala Ramsey Lewis or Les McCann from the same time – and his work on the album has a similar gutbuckety soul feel to it. The rhythm section of Jimmy Rowser bass and Rudy Collins drums is very tight – ... LP, Vinyl record album
Magic Moments
Chess/Cadet, Late 60s. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold
A collection of 60s sessions from John Klemmer – a real giant on the tenor, with a sound that long deserves to be revived! These sides have a sound that's pretty frenetic, and a style that presages a lot of the white free fusion players that would show up in the 70s. The set collects sides ... LP, Vinyl record album

Cadet, 1966. Very Good+
Straight, strong, and soulful sounds from guitarist Kenny Burrell – quite possibly one of his best albums of the 60s, thanks to a really well-focused sound throughout! Goin' Down Home
Cadet, 1965. Very Good-
Well known for the title track, a stepper's classic, this album preserves Don's low down gritty blues style (he played on Prestige sides led by Booker Ervin and Sonny Stitt). The trio lineup featured on this album gives Don the room to sretch out, driving the grooves to their limit. Tracks include ... LP, Vinyl record album

Cadet, 1969. Very Good+
An amazing album by the great guitarist Eddie Fisher – and completely unlike his later funk records! Fantastic small group work from tenorist Sal Nistico – and one of the few records that really finds a way to capture his genius! Cadet, 1974. Near Mint-
An electric set that's similar to Sonny's Jazz Masters albums from the same period – perhaps not as soulful as those, but still pretty nice, with a very different sound than the 60s!
