Haunted Guitar (10 inch LP)

LP (Item 880442) Toshiba (Japan), Early 60s — Condition: Very Good
A beautifully moody record from the Japanese jazz scene of the postwar years – a set that features plenty of guitar solos from Shoichiro Matsumiya – over spare backings by Shin Watanabe and his Six Joes!  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Very Good

  • Vinyl can have some dirt, but nothing major.
  • May not shine under light, but should still be pretty clean, and not too dirty.
  • May have a number of marks (5 to 10 at most), and obvious signs of play, but never a big cluster of them, or any major mark that would be very deep. Most marks should still not click under a fingernail.
  • May not look near perfect, but should play fairly well, with slight surface noise, and the occasional click in part of a song, but never throughout a whole song or more.
  • This is clearly a copy that was played by someone a number of times, but which could also be a good "play copy" for someone new.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Boiling Point

Boiling Point
Toshiba (Japan), Mid 70s. Near Mint-
A hi fidelity set of Japanese jazz – recorded direct to disc in the mid 70s, and featuring a group led by guitarist Shoji Yokouchi, and featuring tenor sax by Kounosuke Saijoh. The overall feel is relatively traditional – almost in a Verve-type swing mode, but with some more open ended ... LP, Vinyl record album

Chester Thompson

Powerhouse
Black Jazz, 1971. Near Mint-
One of the few solo albums ever cut by organist Chester Thompson – a player who's known to most as the keyboardist in Tower Of Power, but one who's also remembered by a select funky few for this killer record for the Black Jazz label! The album's a stripped-down quartet session – with ... LP, Vinyl record album

Miles Davis

Live Evil
Columbia, 1971. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
A beautiful live representation of the energy of the Bitches Brew years – one that has Miles Davis and the group really letting loose with free-flowing, modally-inspired lines – cooking up an incredible blend of acoustic and electric sounds at once! There's a bit of funk here, but not ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ben Webster

Soulville
Verve, 1958. Near Mint-
About as classic as you can get for Ben Webster on Verve Records – a nicely mature, nicely laidback session that really captures the energy promised in the title! The sidemen are all in an easygoing, soulful mode – Oscar Peterson on piano, Herb Ellis on guitar, Ray Brown on bass, and ... LP, Vinyl record album

Gene Krupa & Buddy Rich

Original Drum Battle
Verve, 1952. Very Good+
A pretty darn great album – with a wonderful mix of JATP swing and strong-handed drumming by the leaders. The material was recorded at a Jazz At The Philharmonic show at Carnegie Hall in 1952, and although the main focus appears to be Krupa and Rich's drum work, there's actually some ... LP, Vinyl record album
MPS, 1969. Sealed Gatefold
A wonderful album from guitarist Jim Hall – different than some of his other work, and with a slightly harder edge! The unique session has him playing in an MPS 60s mode – more straight-on than some of his more airy moments – with a sound and tone that still recalls his work with ... LP, Vinyl record album
Blue Note, 1959. Very Good+
Smoking live material from Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers – a set recorded at Birdland, aka The Jazz Corner Of The World – home to a number of key performances by the group! The lineup here features a key transitional version of the group – with the younger Lee Morgan on ... LP, Vinyl record album

Cecil McBee

Music From The Source
Enja (Germany), 1977. Near Mint-
One of the few albums issued as a leader by bassist Cecil McBee – and like all of the rest, a really amazing record that showcases the visionary talent that often made McBee such a key part of other folks' groups! The tracks are long and spiritual, but with slight avant leanings – and ... LP, Vinyl record album

Yusef Lateef

10 Years Hence
Atlantic, 1975. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
A spacious mid 70s set from Yusef Lateef – with some numbers showing his more soaringly spiritual bent – and others hewing towards a more bluesy or loosely funky vein. Tracked live in San Francisco, some numbers were later augmented with overdubbed strings and vocals – there's ... LP, Vinyl record album

Premier/Blue Ribbon, 1956. Very Good-

Rolf & Joachim Kuhn

Lifeline
Impulse (Germany), 2012. Sealed 2LP
The brilliant return of Rolf and Joachim Kuhn to Impulse Records – and a set that's every bit as their landmark album for the label in the 60s! As with that classic – Impressions Of New York – there's a sound here that's let free right from the start – bold stepping forward ... LP, Vinyl record album

Leon Thomas

Full Circle
Flying Dutchman, 1973. Sealed Gatefold
The last album in Leon Thomas' classic run of albums for the Flying Dutchman label – and one of the most unique as well! There's a tighter feel here than some of Thomas' more free-flowing spiritual jazz sessions – but the sound is hardly commercial at all, either – and still has ... LP, Vinyl record album
