Evergreens In Danish Design

LP (Item 876291) Fontana (Denmark), 1963 — Condition: Near Mint-
A rare 60s session from European vocalist Pedro Biker – singing here in English with backing by a very cool combo that includes Sahib Shihab! The sound is tighter and a bit more groovy than most other American male vocal sides from the time – a groove that's often snapping, swinging, and sometimes slightly modal – thanks to sharp rhythm from Bent Axen on piano, Niels Henning Orsted Pedersen on bass, and Bjarne Rostvold on drums. Sahib is probably the best player, though – and his saxophone work here really helps color in the tunes nicely – with a slightly modern sound that pushes a nice edge into the record! Titles include "I Let A Song Go Out Of My Heart", "Willow Weep For Me", "Just In Time", "Green Dolphin Street", "Stella By Starlight", and "Everything Happens To Me".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Shirley Horn

Embers & Ashes
Stereocraft, 1960. Very Good+
An early album by Shirley, and a haunting batch of lonely songs of lost love that has Shirley singing with her trio of Joe Benjamin and Herb Lovelle. One of the greatest albums ever cut by Swedish vocalist Monica Zetterlund – a landmark album that has her singing with the Bill Evans Trio! Emergency Ward!
RCA, 1972. Near Mint-
A great little album cut by Nina Simone during the time she was working with Weldon Irvine – a live album that really has the lady stretching out, and showing off all the cool, complicated grooves she brought to a concert setting! Weldon did the arrangements, and they've got a very righteous ... LP, Vinyl record album

No Count Sarah
Mercury, 1958. Very Good-
The title's a bit of a joke – because the record features a batch sidemen from the Count Basie band – Thad Jones, Joe Newman, Freddy Green, Billy Mitchell, Frank Foster, and others – all working with Sarah, but the Count's name is missing, due to contractual obligations! Columbia, 1960. Near Mint-
A beautiful collaboration between Miles Davis and the great Gil Evans – and perhaps the most perfectly realized of all their projects!
