Jazz At Preservation Hall 4/Pure Blues

CD (Item 873456) Atlantic/Collectables, 1958/1963 — Condition: Used
$9.99 ...

CD

Jazz At Preservation Hall is a great recording from New Orleans' George Lews – caught here after his big return to fame in the late 40s and 50s – but still sounding great! Lewis' clarinet is very firmly in the lead, and gets plenty of room to solo – especially on the album's quartet numbers. A few tracks feature a larger lineup with more nice horn work – from Kid Howard on trumpet and Jim Robinson on trombone – and the rhythms have a great punctuated quality throughout – very well-recorded, with a nice kick that really inspires the solos. Titles include "Salty Dog", "Pork Chops", "Linger Awhile", and "Indian Sagua". Pure Blues is spare blues in this album from pianist Jimmy Yancey, with vocal accompaniment from his wife "Mama" on about half the tracks. Most of the tracks feature Yancey's piano backed by Israel Crosby's bass, and the sound is extremely rootsy. Titles include "How Long Blues", "Make Me A Pallet On the Floor", "Mournful Blues", and "Shave 'Em Dry".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We only use the grade "Used CD" for non-new CDs. This all-encompassing grade was chosen it because we only buy and offer used CDs in the best possible condition.

When you purchase a used CD you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks, the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves), and the booklet to be in good shape. Used CDs may show some signs of use, but if there are significant details or defects we will describe the item's condition (just like we do with LPs), so look for notes on cutout marks, stickers, promo stamps or other details before ordering.

All of our used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. After you receive a used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly. If it does not, you can request a return for a full refund.

Atlantic/Collectables, 1956. Used
Beautiful work from Jimmy Giuffre – and a key album in the development of his spare sound of the late 50s! The record features Jimmy on clarinet – as you'd guess by the title – but this is no hokey set of Benny Goodman or Buddy DeFranco-type tunes. Instead, Giuffre's using the ... CD

Slide Hampton Octet

Somethin' Sanctified
Atlantic (Japan), 1960. Used
Sanctified, indeed – and just the kind of record to show why Slide Hampton was unlike any of his trombone-playing contemporaries! The set's got a tightness and punch that's really unique – not the compact quality of JJ Johnson and Kai Winding, but also not the hardbop of Curtis Fuller ... CD
