California Concert

LP (Item 873412) Contemporary, 1985 — Condition: Near Mint-
Just Sold Out!

LP, Vinyl record album

❔
The title and cover are an homage to the Pacific Jazz label live dates from LA in the 50s – and the music here does a good job of following suit as well! Altoist Bud Shank and trumpeter Shorty Rogers are reunited beautifully in an open-ended live setting – the kind of date that really recalls some of the music Bud, Shorty, and some of their contemporaries recorded many years back – although with perhaps a rhythmic undercurrent here that shows new depths in jazz explored during subsequent decades. Remaining group members include George Cables on piano, Monty Budwig on bass, and Sherman Ferguson on drums – and titles include "Kansas City Tango", "Makin Whoopee", "It's Sand Man", "Aurex", and "Mia".  © 1996-2025, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Cover has a few bends on the edges and a promo stamp.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Condition Notes

If something is relevant, we try to describe it in the notes — especially if it is release or pressing details, or an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Feeling Free
Contemporary, 1969. Near Mint-
Easily one of Barney Kessel's greatest records – done with a really surprising quartet lineup that includes Bobby Hutcherson on vibes, Chuck Domanico on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums! The group's far hipper than Kessel, but that also really drives him to keep up with them – forging ... LP, Vinyl record album

Sonny Rollins

Way Out West
Contemporary, 1957. Near Mint-
A classic set that brings the east coast tenor of Sonny Rollins into contact with a west coast rhythm section of Ray Brown and Shelly Manne! Despite Rollins' silly look on the cover, and the album's overall "western" theme, the session's a brilliant one – right up there with Sonny's ... LP, Vinyl record album

Contemporary, 1955. Near Mint-
Another standout set from Howard Rumsey's Lighthouse All Stars – the kind of group who should have been a gimmicky way to promote his nightclub, but who actually managed to cut some of the best LA records of the time! Contemporary, 1969. Very Good+
A really bold little record from Phineas Newborn – one that certainly has some of the bluesy overtones that you might guess from the title, but which also has other numbers that really leap along the keys! Andre Previn & Russ Freeman

Double Play!
Contemporary, 1957. Sealed
A goofy title and cover – but a really unique session of two-piano jazz, recorded with Russ Freeman and Andre Previn on the keys, plus only the drums of Shelly Manne to provide additional support! Randy Weston with Billy Harper

Carnival
Arista Freedom, 1974. Very Good+
An unusual record for Randy Weston – a freewheeling live set recorded at Montreux in 1974, with Billy Harper joining Weston's group on tenor and flute, playing long spiritual solos that work wonderfully next to Weston's spiralling piano lines! Hank Mobley

Another Workout
Blue Note, 1961/1985. Near Mint-
A rare second chapter to Mobley's famous Workout album – recorded in the early 60s, but not issued until the mid 80s – and even then, only momentarily on vinyl! The session's a great one – a quartet outing with a structure that's similar to Hank's classic Soul Station record, but ... LP, Vinyl record album
