South American Way

LP (Item 870137) MCA (UK), 1940s — Condition: Near Mint-
(80s pressing. Cover is bent a bit at the edges, with some streaky print blemishes at the opening.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Condition Notes

If something is relevant, we try to describe it in the notes — especially if it is release or pressing details, or an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Astrud Gilberto

Shadow Of Your Smile
Verve, 1965. Very Good
One of Astrud Gilberto's greatest albums – and quite possibly our personal favorite! The record features beautifully understated arrangements by Joao Donato, Don Sebesky, and Claus Ogerman – and the instrumentation is a haunting mix of bossa rhythms with darker orchestrations that ... Although this one seems to be a "best of" collection of tracks by Joao Gilberto – it's actually mostly a repackaged version of his stellar Joao Gilberto album for Polydor from the early 70s! If you don't know that one, it's amazing – and it features Joao singing with only ... LP, Vinyl record album
Estudio Eldorado (Brazil), 1983. Sealed
Raul Seixas follows a similar path as Rita Lee, Caetano Veloso, and other important Brazilian artists of the 70s – and uses this live date to really pay tribute to the American music of the past that inspired his crazier work at the time – taking older songs of the 50s and 60s, but ... Som Livre (Brazil), 1975. Very Good-
One of the stranger titles in this series of rare Brazilian soundtracks – a record that mixes together older styles of jazz and popular music to fit the themes and time of the story. Excellent work from this genius Brazilian keyboard player and arranger! The set's part of the National Arts Foundation "Brazilian Popular Music" series – but is a version of the album Feito Em Casa. A live set from this Brazilian pianist – spinning out non-stop performances on each side, and one tune slides into the next with an old school jazzy vibe. Very late nite, small club! LP, Vinyl record album

Bobby Hutcherson

Happenings
Blue Note, 1966. Very Good
One of the greatest Bobby Hutcherson albums for Blue Note – a classic session recorded in quartet form, with a style that seems to set a whole new standard for the vibes in modern jazz! Randy Weston with Billy Harper

Carnival
Arista Freedom, 1974. Very Good+
An unusual record for Randy Weston – a freewheeling live set recorded at Montreux in 1974, with Billy Harper joining Weston's group on tenor and flute, playing long spiritual solos that work wonderfully next to Weston's spiralling piano lines! Harper's searching quality really opens up the ... LP, Vinyl record album
