Brer Soul

LP (Item 8649) A&M, 1968 — Condition: Very Good
Gatefold
Amazing stuff from Melvin Van Peebles! Brer Soul is a mad mix of funky soul insanity and straight up wisdom – a mix of moods that also seems to inform the best of his films, now that we think about it – and it's put together with enough wild clashes of culture to shake anyone up. Funk, soul, jazz, poetry, and righteousness blend into a great batch of tracks! Includes groovy cuts like "Lilly Done the Zampoughi Everytime I Pulled Her Coattail", "Mirror Mirror On The Wall", "The Coolest Place In Town", "The Dozens", "Tenth And Greenwich (Women's House Of Detention)", and "Sera Sera Jim". It's the right kind of late 60s crazy from one of the most unique artists ever to pick up a microphone, camera or any other artistic medium put of front of him!  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Very Good

  • Vinyl can have some dirt, but nothing major.
  • May not shine under light, but should still be pretty clean, and not too dirty.
  • May have a number of marks (5 to 10 at most), and obvious signs of play, but never a big cluster of them, or any major mark that would be very deep. Most marks should still not click under a fingernail.
  • May not look near perfect, but should play fairly well, with slight surface noise, and the occasional click in part of a song, but never throughout a whole song or more.
  • This is clearly a copy that was played by someone a number of times, but which could also be a good "play copy" for someone new.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Stax, 1971. Very Good+ Gatefold
One of the most fantastic soundtracks of the 70s – and maybe even of all time – thanks to a non-stop blast of insane styles and grooves – all quite different than other blacksploitation records of the time! For this, his masterpiece film, Melvin Van Peebles composed a non-stop ... LP, Vinyl record album

Quincy Jones

Dude
A&M, 1981. Very Good
A super-huge album from Quincy Jones – a record that's almost like Quincy's trying to show the whole younger generation that an older master like himself can still deliver the goods! The set was delivered right after Quincy helped out Michael Jackson on Off The Wall – and while it's ... LP, Vinyl record album

LTD

Shine On
A&M, 1980. Near Mint-
Massively solid boogie work from Jeffrey Osborne and LTD – still grooving beautifully at the end of the 70s, and working here with top-shelf production from Bobby Martin! Lani Hall

Sweet Bird
A&M, 1976. Very Good+
Sweet grooving from Lani Hall – a record that's a long way from her roots in Brasil 66, but which has some surprisingly nice touches at times! Herb Alpert produced – and handled arrangements along with Lani and Michel Colombier – and it may well be Colombier's highly rhythmic ... LP, Vinyl record album

Brothers Johnson

Blam
A&M, 1978. Very Good+ Gatefold
Blam is right – an all-out batch of funky tracks from The Brothers Johnson – captured here right in the middle of their classic period with Quincy Jones! Philip Oakey & Giorgio Moroder
A&M, 1985. Near Mint-
The overlooked collaboration between Human League singer Philip Oakey and producer Giorgio Moroder! The duo initially worked together on the outstanding "Together In Electric Dreams" single – a surprise hit from Moroder's soundtrack for a forgettable movie – and given The ... LP, Vinyl record album
A&M, 1975. Very Good+
Early solo work from Carl Graves – a Canadian soul artist who was first heard with the band Skylark, but who sounds pretty darn nice on his own! Carl's got a free and light voice that works well with the tightly crafted arrangements of the set – kind of a real mix of styles, but one ... LP, Vinyl record album

Lani Hall

Sun Down Lady
A&M, 1972. Very Good+
The beautiful first solo album by Lani Hall – recorded after years of work with Sergio Mendes in the Brasil 66 group – and done in a style that certainly reflects her great vocals with that ensemble, yet which also expands her sound tremendously! Brothers Johnson

Right On Time
A&M, 1977. Very Good+
A funky classic from the Brothers Johnson – sweet funky soul, done with a polish few could match! Bill Summers

Straight To The Bank
Prestige, 1978. Very Good
Probably Bill Summers' best LP for Prestige, and certainly the one in which he got his groove straightened out, and more in the pocket than on some of his other ones. The title cut's a massive groover, and the LP version ends in a cool acappella sweep on the chorus that sounds (in our opinion) ... LP, Vinyl record album
