We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

A great single – featuring vocal and instrumental versions of one of Barry's funkiest songs ever! "Never Gonna Give Ya Up" is a stone jammer – very funky drums under a wall of strings, keyboards and Barry's vocals filling up the groove a bit more as the whole thing kicks it ... 7-inch, Vinyl record
20th Century, 1975. Very Good
A monster! "I Wanna Do Something Freaky To You" has had big fame in recent years, but the cut's always been one of Leon Haywood's greatest – a slow, sly, slinky funky number that really never gets old! 7-inch, Vinyl record
20th Century, Late 60s. Near Mint-
Excellent single! Jesse James had a totally unique voice in soul music, and whatever he sang, he managed to sing with warmth and emotion. This beautiful 2 part track has great heart-rending lyrics, great production, and cool crowd noises to give it a cool live studio feel. 7-inch, Vinyl record

Theme From King Kong (part 1 & 2)
20th Century, 1976. Near Mint-
A great one! "Theme From King Kong" is a killer cut – one of the last really funky numbers that Barry White cut in the 70s, with a bouncing rolling bassline that's just great, stepping and changing a lot before the rest of the groove comes in to take the single home! 7-inch, Vinyl record

20th Century, 1974. Very Good
Funky Barry – always a treat! "Can't Get Enough Of Your Love" is one of Barry's best 70s singles – a back/forth jaunty groover with spaciously soulful vocals, and an incredibly catchy hook! 7-inch, Vinyl record
Rib Tips (parts 1 & 2)
Avin, Early 60s. Near Mint-
A great little funky number by Andre Williams – one of those tracks that he originally cut back in the 50s, but redone here in a funkier 60s version! The cut's a nice one, with a jaunty raw groove that points the way towards his later funk stuff – but which also has the best elements ... 7-inch, Vinyl record
Horse/Love Is All Right
Phil-LA Of Soul, Late 60s. Very Good-
A classic! "The Horse" is a great 60s instrumental groover that virtually set the tone for the next 10 years of brass instrumentation in soul music! The cut's got a raw TSU Tornadoes or Bar-Kays kind of feel, with a horn line right up front, in a catchy rolling groove that never quits! 7-inch, Vinyl record
Twinight, Late 60s. Very Good
Great stuff from one of Chicago's excellent lost groups! This track is a great two-parter, with a deep loping soul sound, and a nice kind of party feel driven by the whole group joining in on vocals from time to time. Syl Johnson produced, too! 7-inch, Vinyl record
Volt, Late 60s. Near Mint-
2 early funky tunes from The Bar Kays – recorded back when the group had a heavy trumpet in the frontline, pumping up the groove from drums and guitar! "Don't Do That" is a slow burner – Memphis all the way, with some nice riffing that opens the tune up. "Give Everybody ... 7-inch, Vinyl record
