We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Rap-A-Lot, 1991. Very Good (pic cover)
An absolute classic from the Geto Boys, a chilling bit of self-conscious paranoia built on a now famous Isaac Hayes sample. 12-inch, Vinyl record
Loud, 1993. Very Good- (pic cover)
Nice mid-tempo production by E Swift on these two from the 21 & Over LP. "Likwit" features a nice guest appearance by King Tee, who somehow seems to do his best work on his Alkaholiks' guest appearance. "Only When I'm Drunk" uses the "Seven Minutes of Funk" sample ... 12-inch, Vinyl record
White, 2000. Very Good+

Streetwise, 1982. Very Good
With that early 80's club sound and sung vocals, produced by Arthur Baker and Jellybean. The 10-minute Rockin On Sunshine mix is a mostly instrumental version, with much more spare production, where each drum/bass/synth line is allowed to go on for a minute without all the other orchestration. 12-inch, Vinyl record
Chrysalis, 1994. Very Good (pic cover)
... 12-inch, Vinyl record
MCA, 1992. Near Mint- (pic cover)
A nice bit of New Jack from Wreckx-N-Effect – Teddy Riley production firmly in place, and a bit less of the hard sound than earlier work, but still pretty bounce-y and catchy. 12-inch, Vinyl record
Delicious Vinyl, 1989. Near Mint- (pic cover)
You must have a cold, cold heart if you don't break a smile when the needle hits this one! "Got More Rhymes" isn't as goofy or fun, really more of play for credibility that's a bit of clunker on the rhyme tip, but it's got nicely measured beat that's coproduced by the young Dust Brothers. 12-inch, Vinyl record
Sun Town, 1989. Very Good

Motown, 1979. Very Good
One of Teena's best cuts for Motown, from the Wild & Peaceful album, produced by Rick James. 12-inch, Vinyl record
Warner (UK), 1984. Sealed (pic cover)
A nice Prince flavored track from Sheila E. 12-inch, Vinyl record
