Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

High & Mighty Hawk
Felsted, 1958. Very Good
A near-forgotten gem from Coleman Hawkins excellent late 50s period – recorded for the short-lived Felsted label, and done in a beautifully relaxed way! The tracks here are long and easy-going – at times even more open than Hawkins' work for Verve, and in the style he'd explore even ... LP, Vinyl record album
Hawk In Paris
Vik, 1956. Very Good+
Well, Hawk isn't really in Paris on this one – as the album was recorded in New York, with backings by Manny Albam – but the spirit of Paris is very much alive on the tunes, which are a mixture of postwar French favorites, and others that have a similar sound. Albam's backings are ... LP, Vinyl record album
Gilded Hawk
Capitol, Mid 50s. Very Good-
Tremendous work from Coleman Hawkins – a sublime "with strings" session from the 50s, and one of Bean's greatest albums from the decade! The setting is quite different than other sets with Hawk on tenor – soft strings from Glen Osser, cascading beautifully and gently – ... LP, Vinyl record album
Speak No Evil
RCA, 1976. Very Good
One of the tightest 70s albums from Buddy Rich – a record that's got some smooth and soulful touches, and a groove that's quite different than most of his other work! X/RCA, Mid 50s. Very Good+
Very hip work from Red Norvo and his sextet – an evocative album that's divided up into "rose" and "blue" cover images on the front and back – but which unfortunately doesn't provide any data on the players! We can say that in addition to sharp vibes from Red, the ... LP, Vinyl record album

RCA, 1978. Near Mint-
A strange and wonderful session from the Jones/Lewis big band – one of their hippest of the 70s, recorded in Finland with a host of very cool players! Afternoon At Birdland (X pressing)
RCA/X, 1954. Very Good
One of the best sessions cut by Kai and JJ during the 50's, and a good live session with a lot looser feel than some of their studio sessions – which tend to be a bit restrained. The rhythm section features Dick Katz, Al Harewood, and Peck Morrison – but the main solos are held by Kai ... LP, Vinyl record album
Triple Play
RCA, 1967. Very Good
The "triple play" in the title refers to the fact that Johnny's working here with 3 different groups – all of them large ones, and stuffed with Ellington-esque players that include Ray Nance, Paul Gonsalves, Milt Hinton, Tiny Grimes, Hank Jones, Cat Anderson, Jimmy Hamilton, Harry ... Lofty Fake Anagram
RCA, 1967. Near Mint-
A standout classic from Gary Burton – the kind of fresh-voiced and angularly modern session that showed why his sound on the vibes was one of the most revolutionary in jazz at the time! Movies N Me
RCA, 1974. Near Mint-
Totally groovy work from John Dankworth – a 70s album that features slightly electrified versions of some of his older film and TV themes!
