We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Gunn . . . Number One!
RCA, 1968. Very Good+
Nice 60s crime jazz from Mancini! Although Mancini's fame was made in the late 50s for his work on the classic Peter Gunn TV show, it's less known that he also did the score for the less-than-successful Peter Gunn film. Directed in 1967 by Blake Edwards, the film was a weak attempt to transfer ... LP, Vinyl record album
Peter Gunn
RCA, 1959. Very Good
A classic! This is the record that made Mancini's career, and forever transformed the face of crime and jazz. The record's a stunning batch of instrumentals, played by a crack group of west coast players who also performed regularly in the TV show. Titles include the classic "Peter ... LP, Vinyl record album
RCA/Entracte, 1957. Sealed
Although the title of the film (and book, and TV series) soon became a synonym for sex and sin, the largely orchestral score to the movie is far less sexy than you'd expect. Franz Waxman handled the scoring of the film in pretty much the same way as he'd handled a lot of his other classic ... LP, Vinyl record album
Section Speciale
RCA (France), 1975. Near Mint- Gatefold
70s soundtrack work from Eric Demarsan – done for one of the more obscure political thrillers from director Costa Gavras! The music features work by George Arvanitas on piano, Guy Pedersen on bass, and Daniel Humair on drums – plus "musique magnetique" by Takis! LP, Vinyl record album

One of the darker scores we've ever heard from Francis Lai – the French composer best remembered for his famous 60s themes for Claude Lelouch, but who also penned some amazing sounds in the 70s! The score has a wonderful sense of space – that spare, haunting element that Lai first ... LP, Vinyl record album

RCA, 1964. Very Good+
A wonderful lost Nelson Riddle soundtrack – scored for the "gentlemen criminal" show The Rogues, which ran briefly on NBC during the mid 60s – starring Charles Boyer, Gig Young, and David Niven! The work is some of our favorite by Riddle during the period – lightly ... LP, Vinyl record album
Party
RCA, 1968. Very Good+
A great Mancini score for one of the goofiest films of the 60s! Peter Sellers stars as the sitar-playing Indian actor Hrundi Bakshi – next to the lovely Claudine Longet, who makes one of her few film appearances – and the whole thing's set to one of the greatest scores ever by Henry ... Call us corny, but we really love this one! The musical's a brilliant summation of all the energy that went into American business in the postwar years – and offers a great parody on the corporate shenanigans of the Madison Avenue era. Robert Morse is fantastic in the lead role – but ... LP, Vinyl record album

MGM, Early 70s. Near Mint-
A dreamy little soundtrack by Piero Piccioni – not as mad as some of his more famous Italian work, but with plenty of nice touches! Piccioni's going for more of an atmospheric approach here with isolated instrumentation drifting over rhythmic string passages, in a way that's halfway between ... LP, Vinyl record album
Wiz – Original Cast Album
Atlantic, 1975. Very Good+
The original first recording of The Wiz – the super-soul musical that remade Wizard Of Oz for the 70s!
