We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Shadoks (Germany), 1969. Near Mint- Gatefold (reissue)
Blistering work from Third Eye – a group who were supposedly some of the hippest rockers on the South African scene at the start of the 70s – a claim we definitely believe after hearing this great little record! The group have a way of jamming hard without going over the top – ... LP, Vinyl record album
Blood Sweat & Tears 4
Columbia, 1971. Near Mint- Gatefold
Okay, we admit it, we never really know whether we want to call Blood, Sweat & Tears a funky, soulful rock band, or a bunch of white guys making a respectable effort at curring soul albums, but either way, the stuff sounds good to us! By this point the group had enjoyed enough chart success to ... LP, Vinyl record album
Ginger Baker's Air Force 2
Atco, 1970. Very Good+
Ginger continues his further exploration into soul, funk, and African rhythms – working here in a mode that takes a Brit jazz rock groove and expands it with a growing interest in the Afro Funk and South African jazz influences that were floating around the London scene at the time. Tracks ... LP, Vinyl record album
Reprise, 1967. Very Good+ Gatefold
One of the most fully-formed albums from The Fugs – still quite hippy dippy, but with a focus that's sometimes missing in their other work! And despite the somewhat major label placement of the set, there's arguably even more power here than on the group's earlier indie sides – thanks ... LP, Vinyl record album
Same People
Dunhill, 1970. Very Good
Brassy jazzy hard and tight little tracks from this blue-eyed southern soul brother – with production by the great Huey P Meux. The album's core is a rocking southern sound, but there are definitely more soul elements here – and the heavy drums on the set make it super nice and funky! ... LP, Vinyl record album
Golden Age Of Wireless
Capitol, 1981. Near Mint-
With "Europa & The Pirate Twins", "Flying North", "Weightless", "Leipzig", "Windpower", "She Blinded Me With Science", "Commercial Breakup", "Urges", "Airwaves", "Radio Silence" and "Cloudbur ... LP, Vinyl record album
Aja
ABC, 1977. Near Mint- Gatefold
An undisputed masterpiece, and a record we never tire of hearing – unabashedly the inspiration for our years of jazzy exploration as adults, even though it was probably the closest thing we ever got to the genre as wee lads! Walter Becker & Donald Fagan raise their already-high bar to ... LP, Vinyl record album
Friends
Capitol, 1968. Very Good-
An under-discovered album from The Beach Boys – and one of our favorite records by the group! The set's kind of a slinking back to the personal, quirky territory of Smile, but with a somewhat more intimate, less-ambitious feel – one that comes off like a tapestry of simple expressions ... Aerial Ballet
RCA, 1968. Very Good+
Beautiful early work from the great Harry Nilsson – and exactly the kind of record that set him apart right from the start! The tunes are playful, wonderful, and very quirky – yet still sung with this sense of earnestness that sets Nilsson apart from most of the rest of his generation ... LP, Vinyl record album
Chase
Epic, 1971. Very Good+
The debut album from Chase – one of the hippest jazz rock combos of the 70s! The self-titled Chase album first burned onto the market in 1971 – and it's a great distillation of a groove that was bubbling around in various other segments at the time – some of the tighter big band ... LP, Vinyl record album
Space Rangers
Mercury, 1974. Very Good+
Sure, this one might have bottomed out when it was first released – but it's an excellent batch of hard heavy space rock tracks, with great drums on many numbers, making it a legendary set for beatheads! Titles include the famously sampled "Sunshine Superman", "Hollywood ... LP, Vinyl record album
Elektra, 1968. Very Good+ Gatefold
A true Celebration Of The Lizard – with the cuts "The Unkown Soldier", "Spanish Caravan", "Summer's Almost Gone", "Not To Touch The Earth", and "Hello I Love You". LP, Vinyl record album
