We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

London, 1968. Near Mint-
An incredible first album from The Moody Blues – way way different than any of their later high-concept work, and much more in the best soul and R&B-drenched material of the UK mod scene of the time! A number of cuts here are remakes of American soul tracks – including their ... LP, Vinyl record album
Beacon From Mars
Epic, Late 60s. Near Mint- (reissue)
A psychedelic nugget from the1968 – and one of the few rare albums by the obscure Bay Area rockers Kaleidoscope – and the second of their twin late 60s masterpieces for Epic Records! Capitol, 1968. Very Good-
An under-discovered album from The Beach Boys – and one of our favorite records by the group! The set's kind of a slinking back to the personal, quirky territory of Smile, but with a somewhat more intimate, less-ambitious feel – one that comes off like a tapestry of simple expressions ... Columbia, 1971. Near Mint- Gatefold
Okay, we admit it, we never really know whether we want to call Blood, Sweat & Tears a funky, soulful rock band, or a bunch of white guys making a respectable effort at curring soul albums, but either way, the stuff sounds good to us! By this point the group had enjoyed enough chart success to ... LP, Vinyl record album

An undisputed masterpiece, and a record we never tire of hearing – unabashedly the inspiration for our years of jazzy exploration as adults, even though it was probably the closest thing we ever got to the genre as wee lads! Punch The Clock
Columbia, 1983. Very Good+
One of those rock records that shouldn't have worked – Elvis ditched the pounding pop of his earlier post punk years for this one, replacing it with 80s synthesizer soul production and hired back up singers – but it works, thanks to Costello's pen being nearly as sharp as it ever was. ...
