We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

London, 1968. Very Good+
An incredible first album from The Moody Blues – way way different than any of their later high-concept work, and much more in the best soul and R&B-drenched material of the UK mod scene of the time! A number of cuts here are remakes of American soul tracks – including their ... LP, Vinyl record album

Zapple, 1968. Very Good+
Yoko shows her Fluxus roots on this album of trippy experimental stuff. Side one is a live piece called "Cambridge 1969", which is performed by John and Yoko, with the help of avant jazzmen John Tchicai and John Stevens. Lots of noisy guitar on that one. Side 2 features a number of ... LP, Vinyl record album
Johnny The Fox
Mercury, 1976. Very Good
Ok, so can we admit that we love this one for just what it is? Thin Lizzy's always been tops in our book – and at this point, they're at their best, and sound like everything that AM rock dreams are made of, albeit with a heavier crunch. However, in order to regain our credibility, we'll ... LP, Vinyl record album
Raspberries
Capitol, 1972. Very Good
The under appreciated 1972 debut from the Raspberries – a wonderful album released with some fanfare at the time, and all but ignored for too many years. The Raspberries added an unpretentious, tightly crafted midwestern twist on the Brit invasion sound and LA harmony pop – coming up ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ralph, 1978. Very Good+
Always-engimatic sounds from The Residents – a bit more fully-formed than some of their earliest recordings, but still sprawled out nicely over the space of the full album! There's almost an Eraserhead feel to the music at times – dreamy, yet creepy – and other moments bring in ... LP, Vinyl record album
Easter
Arista, 1978. Very Good+
Among the best of the best of early Patti Smith albums – the Easter LP from 1978 – also her biggest hit ever! Easter splits the difference between accessible, if rawly impassioned rock & roll and more raucous and in yer face rebellious poetry. There's a stylistic gulf between the ... LP, Vinyl record album
Absolutely Free
Verve, 1967. Very Good+ Gatefold
One of the most mindblowing pop culture pastiches of the 60s – a record that's as absolutely mad as it is absolutely free – and proof that a whole new generation of musicians like Zappa were using the studio like an instrument itself! This is work that could have never existed away ... LP, Vinyl record album
ABC, 1969. Very Good+ Gatefold
Surprisingly funky at times – and beautifully produced, too! Titles include "Funk #49", "Woman", "The Bomber", "Closet Queen", "Thanks", "Ashes In The Rain & I", and "Tend My Garden". LP, Vinyl record album
Boss Is Back!
Prestige, 1969. Very Good+
In "back", the title is pointing to the fact that Gene Ammons is back on the scene, after being released from 7 years of a tragic 15 year narcotics sentence in prison. The album marks a proud return for Jug – who'd not recorded since a very successful flurry of sides recorded in ... LP, Vinyl record album
