We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Twine Time/The Bump
Mar V Lus, 1963. Very Good+
What can we say? "Twine Time" is one of the all-time classics – and it's still the best-remembered track by this legendary funky 45 artist. "The Bump" is pretty darn nice, too – and this one's not a 70s bump track, but a harder, 60s one! 7-inch, Vinyl record
Barracuda/Do It One More Time
Mar V Lus, Early 60s. Near Mint-
Classic hard-grooving Alvin Cash – with that early Mar V Lus sound that feels like it was recorded at the bottom of a well! Not that that's a problem, though, as the approach makes the single bump and groove right off your turntable! "Barracuda" is a funky funky fishy dance – ... 7-inch, Vinyl record
Steeltown, Late 60s. Good
The historical first release ever from The Jackson Five! 7-inch, Vinyl record
Fast Track, 1974. Near Mint-
Classic soul club track, with a hard groove that has a Little Beaver guitar feel to it, and Sugar Billy's deep vocals over the top, asking the musical question in the title. Very groovy, and the album's a tough one to find! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Study In Brown (7 inch EP)
EmArcy, 1955. Very Good (pic cover)
Classic material from the team of Clifford Brown and Max Roach – and a set that features the west coast hardbop group that included Harold Land on tenor, George Morrow on bass, and Bud Powell's brother Richie on piano. Tracks are short, and played with great boppish fire and fury – ... 7-inch, Vinyl record
ABC, 1975. Very Good
Nice single of one of Ike's biggest hits after his Stax years – a heavy hot buttered groove, and the instrumental is a good take on the club classic! 7-inch, Vinyl record
Cotillion, Early 70s. Very Good-
Although "Plain & Simple Girl" was recorded after Garland's classic UNI album, and although it never appeared on a full LP, it's still one of his best tracks, and one of the most eduring sides of Chicago soul he ever recorded. The whole thing's got a sweet jaunty Chicago soul groove ... 7-inch, Vinyl record
Oooh, Baby Baby/Girl I Love
Windy C, Late 60s. Very Good
Original Windy C single of this Chicago soul classic, with stellar production by Curtis Mayfield on both sides, and the kind of sound that made the Burke family a legend while the Jackson 5 were still in diapers! Sweet heavenly vocals – and harmonies that are way better crafted than you'd ... 7-inch, Vinyl record
