Skullduggery (with bonus tracks)

LP (Item 860563) Clean Feed (Portugal), 2015 — Condition: Used
2LP
(€- || £- || ¥-) (approx.)

Usually, when we hear the term "skullduggery", it means that someone's up to something bad – but here, it refers to something especially wonderful – a mighty meeting of the legendary Joe McPhee with a hip trio of overseas improvisers! The music is very open and powerful – almost back to the modes of Joe's earlier years – as his work on saxes and pocket trumpet open up in loft jazz style expressions – alongside more sax from John Dikeman, bass from Jon Rune Strom, and drums from Tollef Ostvang – the last three of whom make up the Universal Indians combo. The tracks are open and long – and filled especially with long runs from both horn players, punctuated nicely by the drums, and draped with deeper colors on the bass. Titles include "Yeah And", "Dewey's Do", "Wanted", and "Skullduggery". LP features two bonus tracks – "And Then" and "Encore".  © 1996-2018, Dusty Groove, Inc.

We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Clean Feed (Portugal), 2016. Near Mint-
A group who've got a pretty heavy sound for such a poetic name – hardly the lightness you'd expect from the stars – and instead a full-on wave of improvised sound from a mixed electric and acoustic lineup! Columbia, 1977. Very Good+
A fantastic album from tenor legend Benny Golson – one in which he reinvents his sound for the 70s, but still keeps all the tight sense of arrangement we loved in his earlier work! Basie's In The Bag
Brunswick, 1967. Very Good-
Count Basie's definitely in the bag on this one – not so much as strong of a jazz bag as in classic years, but instead this very cool blend of soul and funk styles with his Kansas City roots! The record should be thought of more as a hip instrumental album – kind of in the jaunty 60s ... LP, Vinyl record album
