Ace Records 40th Anniversary Box Set (7 x 7 inch singles)

7-inch (Item 859345) Ace (UK), 1950s/1960s/1970s — Condition: Sealed
7 x 7 inch set
(€28.56 || £25.37 || ¥3829) (approx.)

A beautiful package – done in celebration of 40 years of wonderful music from Ace Records – and a great reminder of why we love them so much! The set is book-style – similar to the Motown Singles CD sets, or a vintage 78rpm album – and it includes lots of text and notes on the music – plus individual pages that include all the music on 45s, too! The music runs the gamut of all the great styles that Ace has given us over the years – vintage soul, blues, funk, and even a bit of rock – and tracks include "Confessin The Blues (alt)" by BB King, "Tough Lover (alt)" by Etta James, "One Cup Of Coffee & A Cigarette" by Glen Glenn, "You're Under Arrest" by The Shirelles, "Not My Girl" by The Platters, "No Other Guy" by Lou Johnson, "Try A Little Tenderness (alt)" by Otis Redding, "You Gotta Have Soul" by James Carr, "Psychedelic Sally" by Eddie Jefferson, "Keep On Brother Keep On" by Johnny King & Fatback, "I Got Mine" by The Charlatans, "Get The Picture (alt)" by The Scot Richard Case, "Don't Cry For Me" by The Zombies, and "Keys To Your Heart" by The 101ers. Limited to 1000 copies, too!  © 1996-2017, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Sealed

This is what it says, that the record is still held fast in shrink-wrap. We tend to be pretty suspicious about these things, so if the shrink-wrap doesn't look original, or if the record seems to have undergone some damage over time, we'll probably take it out of the wrapper to ensure that it's in good shape — which is why we don't have more of these. In some cases the shrink-wrap may be torn in spots, but if it's not possible the record has been taken out and played, the record will still qualify as "Sealed".

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Avin, Early 60s. Near Mint-
A great little funky number by Andre Williams – one of those tracks that he originally cut back in the 50s, but redone here in a funkier 60s version! The cut's a nice one, with a jaunty raw groove that points the way towards his later funk stuff – but which also has the best elements ... 7-inch, Vinyl record

Phil-LA Of Soul, Late 60s. Very Good-
A classic! "The Horse" is a great 60s instrumental groover that virtually set the tone for the next 10 years of brass instrumentation in soul music! The cut's got a raw TSU Tornadoes or Bar-Kays kind of feel, with a horn line right up front, in a catchy rolling groove that never quits! 7-inch, Vinyl record
Twinight, Late 60s. Very Good
Great stuff from one of Chicago's excellent lost groups! This track is a great two-parter, with a deep loping soul sound, and a nice kind of party feel driven by the whole group joining in on vocals from time to time. Syl Johnson produced, too! 7-inch, Vinyl record
Amy, Late 60s. Near Mint-
Hard hard hard New Orleans soul! Lee's in perfect form on both sides – especially "Everything I Do", one of his best-ever tracks! Allen Toussaint produced, and the material is a lot rawer than later stuff by Lee! 7-inch, Vinyl record
Volt, Late 60s. Near Mint-
2 early funky tunes from The Bar Kays – recorded back when the group had a heavy trumpet in the frontline, pumping up the groove from drums and guitar! "Don't Do That" is a slow burner – Memphis all the way, with some nice riffing that opens the tune up. "Give Everybody ... 7-inch, Vinyl record
