We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Enchanted Sea
Liberty, Early 60s. Very Good
A great album by Denny, with a nice approach that has sort of a drifting South Seas feel! The record is one of his last good ones for Liberty, and has lots of nice tracks like "My Isle Of Golden Dreams", "Beyond The Reef", "Flotsam & Jetsam", and "Cross ... LP, Vinyl record album
Quiet Village
Liberty, Late 50s. Very Good
An undisputed classic in the exotica genre – and the record that yielded Martin Denny his biggest hit! The title track "Quiet Village" was originally written by Les Baxter, but it was Martin Denny's approach that really managed to send the tune over the top – using spare ... LP, Vinyl record album
Hi Fi, Late 50s. Very Good-
One of Arthur Lyman's first LPs –- a brilliant set of percussively grooving tracks, modulated at a low tempo, and recorded in the Henry J. Kaiser aluminum dome in Hawaii with a sound that inspired countless other exotic groups. Art plays vibes, and is augmented by percussion and piano, plus ... LP, Vinyl record album
Capitol, Early 50s. Very Good-
One of the earliest Capitol albums by otherworldly singer Yma Sumac! Liberty, Early 60s. Very Good
Denny's exotic combo is backed by some strings and woodwinds – for a "romantic" sound that's actually a lot better than you might expect! The overall effect is more along the lines of a sweeping Latin-tinged soundtrack from the early 60s, and the vibes and piano stand out well ... LP, Vinyl record album
Perfume Set To Music (10 inch LP)
RCA, Early 50s. Very Good-
Very cool little 10 inch album of Harry Revel's classic bit of theremin recordings for RCA from the early 50's. Dr. Samuel Hoffman plays the theremin, and Les Baxter conducts, with a sound that's similar to his classic Music From Out Of The Moon album. Great stuff, and a tough one to find in any ... Capitol, Early 50s. Very Good-
Early work from Yma Sumac – with that moody mix of other worldly vocals and semi-Latin instrumentation that made her a popular one with the early exotic crowd. Yma runs up and down the vocal scale, while Moises Vivanco leads the band in a set of crashing dramatic orchestrations with a ... LP, Vinyl record album

Capitol, Late 50s. Very Good+
A landmark album of exotica! Tamboo was cut with Les' orchestra and chorus – and it's a swirling mass of tribal drums, singing strings, and moody voices that would forever change the face of easy listening. Les' compositions are astounding – filled with all the sophsitication of a ... LP, Vinyl record album

Paint It Black
Cadet, 1966. Near Mint-
One of the better albums by this great Chicago soul studio group – but all of them are pretty nice!
