Mind's Eye

LP (Item 8531) RCA, 1974 — Condition: Very Good+

Music beyond description or definition – one of Jon Lucien's legendary albums for RCA – a true pinnacle in the generation of sophisticated 70s soul! The sound here is a unique blend that's never been heard before – and hardly ever since, even though many have tried – a complicated tapestry of jazz, soul, Latin, and Brazilian elements – all served up with a sense of warmth and soul that are undeniable, and which gives the record a tremendous sense of personality. Arrangements are by Jon himself, but Dave Grusin also headed up the orchestra – and does a beautiful job here as well, with some sweet electric touches that are right up there with his best 70s work. The record's got a huge amount of great tracks – like "Ghetto Song", "Soul Chant", "When the Morning Comes", and "Prayer for Peace" – and it stands as one of the best ones that Jon Lucien ever recorded!  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Original pressing. Label has a small sticker.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Rashida
RCA, 1973. Very Good
Amazing work from the great Jon Lucien – and probably his best-ever record! Linda Hopkins

Linda Hopkins
RCA, 1972. Near Mint-
Stormin' Diva soul on RCA, with arrangements by Bob James and Wade Marcus. Soulful, deep vocals, with a bit of a gospelly feel. Tracks include "Listen Women!!", "Somebody's Always Winning", and "It's My Beat". LP, Vinyl record album

Soul Train Gang

Soul Train Gang
Soul Train/RCA, 1976. Very Good+
Although it would be easy to write these guys off as a cheapo product emblazoned with the Soul Train name to cash in on the fame of the TV show, the gang's actually a pretty decent harmony soul act, and they really benefit from strong Norman Harris production on this LP. The ensemble features 2 ... LP, Vinyl record album

Birth Day
RCA, 1972. Near Mint-
Great early stuff by the New Birth – with a sound that's a lot funkier than some of their other records! Revelation

Get In Touch
RCA, 1979. Very Good+
Harmony soul, retooled for the discos – as most of the tracks on this self-produced set feature strident grooves that must have been aimed at the clubs. The sound's pretty good overall, though, thanks to some great vocals. Luther Vandross is listed in the vocal credits – although we ... LP, Vinyl record album

Great early work from Jose Feliciano – and definitely the "bag full of soul" promised in the title, as the album's got a wonderfully heartfelt feel all the way through! Jose Feliciano

Memphis Menu
RCA, 1972. Near Mint- Gatefold
An excellent album from Jose Feliciano – recorded with a lot of Memphis soul influences, as the title indicates, but still with that beautifullly jazzy style that he was using in his earlier LA recordings.
