We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Fresh Air
A&M, 1969. Very Good
A sweet late instrumental classic from the 60s glory years at A&M – and a record that's far different than some of the earlier work by the Baja Marimba Band! Sure, the group's still got plenty of their "fake" Mexican sound in place here – obviously they can't drop the ... LP, Vinyl record album
Guitar From Ipanema
Capitol, Mid 60s. Very Good
Breezy bossa nova – Hollywood 60s style! The album's one of the best cut for Capitol by guitarist Laurindo Almeida – and has a sweet groovy little style that features Laurindo's lovely guitar work over some lightly dancing small combo backings that include flute, harmonica, organ, ... Taste Of India
Liberty, 1968. Very Good+
Martin Denny takes a tip from the sound of the East – adding some slight Indian flavors to his usual exotica groove – with the help of arranger George Tipton! Most of the music is still in the lush piano instrumental mode that Denny was using in these later Liberty years – but ... LP, Vinyl record album

Symphonic Soul
RCA, 1975. Very Good+
One of Henry Mancini's grooviest LPs from the 70s – a mixture of tight large arrangements with a smooth funky edge, similar to some of his best soundtrack work at the time! Hip Hug-Her
Stax, 1967. Very Good-
Booker T's definitely getting a bit funky with this one – stepping off with the incredible title cut, a tune which really complicates the groove from the earlier years! The sound is still solid Memphis soul, with a raw instrumental vibe – but the grooves are even better than before, ... LP, Vinyl record album
Cameosis
Chocolate City, 1980. Very Good+
Full-on frenetic funk from Cameo – one of the group's tightest albums, yet still without any of the too-slick sounds of later years! The sound here is amazing – and we always find ourselves wondering how a group of guys can hit such perfect grooves with just a bunch of basses, guitars, ... LP, Vinyl record album
Stax/Volt, 1971. Very Good+ Gatefold
A fantastic album by The Dramatics – with a harder funkier sound than you'll find on most of their other records of the time – a gritty gem from the group's early years, and a record that really deserves its placement on the Stax label! The record has the group moving into a post-Tempta ... LP, Vinyl record album
