CCC

LP (Item 844274) Atlantic (Germany), 1975 — Condition: Very Good
A really cool bit of European fusion – almost in an MPS electric mode, which is maybe no surprise since the great Volker Kriegel is in the combo on guitar! Other players include leader Curt Cress on drums and percussion – plus Dave King on bass, Kristian Schultze on keyboards, and Ack Van Rooyen on cornet.  © 1996-2023, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Very Good

  • Vinyl can have some dirt, but nothing major.
  • May not shine under light, but should still be pretty clean, and not too dirty.
  • May have a number of marks (5 to 10 at most), and obvious signs of play, but never a big cluster of them, or any major mark that would be very deep. Most marks should still not click under a fingernail.
  • May not look near perfect, but should play fairly well, with slight surface noise, and the occasional click in part of a song, but never throughout a whole song or more.
  • This is clearly a copy that was played by someone a number of times, but which could also be a good "play copy" for someone new.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Jimmy Owens-Kenny Barron Quintet

You Had Better Listen
Atlantic, 1967. Very Good+
An oft-overlooked and surprisingly soulful session on Atlantic – a sublime pairing of the talents of trumpeter Jimmy Owens and pianist Kenny Barron! The set's got a groove that's pretty unique – not really Blue Note or Prestige – but not like other Atlantic Records jazz as well ... LP, Vinyl record album

Phineas Newborn

Here Is Phineas
Atlantic, Late 50s. Near Mint-
Classic early work by Phineas Newborn – and a record cut right after his emergence from the great Memphis scene of the 1950s! Most of the album features trio material – cut with Kenny Clarke on drums and Oscar Pettiford on bass – but a few tracks also feature some very nice ... LP, Vinyl record album

Jimmy Giuffre, Teddy Charles, & Others

Historic Jazz Concert At Music Inn
Atlantic, 1957. Very Good
An obscure one – and a rare meeting of modern and trad players, or perhaps we should say modern players with an ability to fit well in a tradish setting. The album features Giuffre playing clarinet and tenor in 2 swing-based groups – one that features Pee Wee Russell, George Wein, ... LP, Vinyl record album

Les McCann & Eddie Harris

Swiss Movement
Atlantic, 1969. Very Good
The extremely successful union of two of Atlantic's biggest funky jazz stars, caught live in Switzerland, with the amazing Benny Bailey sitting in on trumpet. The tracks are long and funky, and are virtually a blueprint for pop soul jazz playing of the time – mixing slinky rhythms with some ... LP, Vinyl record album

Modern Jazz Quartet

Modern Jazz Quartet (Atlantic)
Atlantic, 1957. Near Mint-
One of the first MJQ albums on Atlantic – and a bit fresher than some of their later outings, when it seemed like they were churning records out at the drop of a hat! Titles include an extended medley of standards, all given the MJQ touch – plus the drum-heavy "La Ronde", and ... LP, Vinyl record album

Modern Jazz Quartet

Plastic Dreams
Atlantic, 1971. Very Good+ Gatefold
One of the groovier albums the Modern Jazz Quartet ever recorded – as you might expect, given the cover and title! Ornette Coleman

Free Jazz
Atlantic, 1961. Very Good+ Gatefold
The title gets it right – as the album's easily the closest thing to free jazz that Ornette Coleman ever recorded – an album-length improvisation played by a "double quartet" that's overflowing with classic players! The style here is a fair bit like John Coltrane's Ascension ... LP, Vinyl record album

Robin Kenyatta

Gypsy Man
Atlantic, 1973. Near Mint-
Sweet electric funk from Robin Kenyatta – but a set with some slightly complicated moments too! The album's a bit like some of Yusef Lateef's more electric moments on Atlantic, although probably not as cerebral overall – and Robin plays a range of reeds, including alto, flute, and ... LP, Vinyl record album

Jan Akkerman

Jan Akkerman Live
Atlantic, 1978. Near Mint-
A late 70s live set from space jazz/jazz rock guitar guru Jan Akkerman – rolling from spacious, sparely haunting atmospherics to tighter, sax and keys punctuated fusion jams! This live set was his Atlantic followed up his self titled album, and it grooves in similar territory – not as ... LP, Vinyl record album
Blue Note, 1968. Very Good+
The quintessential sound of late 60s Horace Silver – on one hand still very much in the Blue Note soul jazz groove that earned him plenty of jukebox single play, but on the other hand really stretching out with a style that's a bit more righteous than before! Horace shows that he can still ... LP, Vinyl record album

John Coltrane & Paul Quinichette

Cattin' With Coltrane & Quinichette
Prestige, 1957. Good
A great meeting of tenor sax talents old and young – as the up-and-coming John Coltrane plays alongside Paul "Vice Pres" Quinichette – in a classic Prestige session of well-blown saxophone work!
