❔

Excellent trippy pop-psychedelia from Gabor Szabo! The record's a bit less jazz than some of his other efforts, with more of that faked-out "eastern"production that you'd get on efforts like these – with occasional voices behind his guitar. Titles include "The End Of Life", "White Rabbit", "Saigon Bride", "Twelve Thirty", "To Sir With Love", and "Are You There?"  © 1996-2021, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Green label ABC/Impulse pressing. Cover has some clear tape on the spine.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Gabor Szabo

Gypsy '66
Impulse, 1966. Very Good- Gatefold
One of Gabor Szabo's best records – a hip small combo session, featuring backup by Gary McFarland, Sadao Watanabe, Richard Davis, and Willie Rodriguez – an odd kind of lineup, but one that goes well with the offbeat grooves of the set! The overall sound has lots of touches of the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Gabor Szabo

Bacchanal
Skye, Late 60s. Very Good Gatefold
A wonderful album from Gabor Szabo – one with the same freely grooving, slightly-psychedelic sound that he was using on his best records for the Impulse label! Two guitars head up the quintet – those of Gabor and Jim Stewart – and they trade breezy lines throughout, grooving over ... LP, Vinyl record album

Michael Brecker

Michael Brecker
Impulse, 1987. Near Mint-
Featuring Charlie Haden on bass, Jack DeJohnette on drums, Pat Metheny on guitar, Kenny Kirkland on keyboards. LP, Vinyl record album

Shirley Scott

For Members Only
Impulse, 1964. Very Good- Gatefold
Groovin' set of tracks that has the lady organist in two settings – one with her trio with Jimmy Cobb on drums, the other with a hard swingin' big band led by Oliver Nelson. She's great with Nelson's band, and swings in the same hard way that Jimmy Smith does in the same setting. Tracks ... LP, Vinyl record album

Lionel Hampton

You Better Know It !!!
Impulse, 1964. Very Good+ Gatefold
A warm and wonderful 60s session from Lionel Hampton – recorded in a personal and intimate way, one that even surpasses his great small combo sides of the 50s! There's a relaxed feel here that you don't always get with Hamp – a gently grooving quality that we really like a lot, and ... LP, Vinyl record album
Impulse, Early 60s. Near Mint- Gatefold
The famous 50s team of JJ Johnson and Kai Winding are reunited strongly here – after working alone for several years on their own projects! The groove here is a bit more open and less arranged than some of the pair's earlier projects – mostly just two trombones in the lead, soloing ... LP, Vinyl record album
Impulse, Mid 60s. Very Good Gatefold
Despite a title that might make you think otherwise, this is actually a pretty darn groovy session, one that features Shirley wailing away on the organ, with big Oliver Nelson arrangements behind her – in a style that's similar to Nelson's work on Verve with Jimmy Smith. The set list ... LP, Vinyl record album

Gary McFarland

Point Of Departure
Impulse, 1963. Sealed Gatefold
A great record – and one that's filled with so many wonderful little moments! The whole thing's a very cool, very off-beat set of jazz tracks recorded by vibist Gary McFarland, with a group that includes Jimmy Raney on guitar, Richie Kamuca on tenor, and Steve Swallow on bass – a ... LP, Vinyl record album

Louis Bellson

Thunderbird
Impulse, 1963. Near Mint- Gatefold
Duke Ellington's drummer from the 50's leads a thunderous octet that includes Harry Edison on trumpet, Sam Most on alto, and Jim Cook on tenor. Bellson's drums are out front, and he kicks the group nice and hard through tracks like "Thunderbird", "Nails", "No More ... LP, Vinyl record album

Emil Richards

Spirit of 1976
Impulse, Late 60s. Near Mint- Gatefold
Excellent groovy jazz from the great Emil Richards! The legendary LA vibist is caught live at Donte's – and is playing with Dave Makay on piano and percussion, as well as a bunch of other LA hipsters. The general groove is more jazz oriented than Emil's other records, but still very nice. ... LP, Vinyl record album

Oliver Nelson's Big Band

Live From Los Angeles
Impulse, 1967. Very Good Gatefold
A unique little outing for Oliver Nelson – one that breaks him out of the familiar territory of the studio, and puts him in a much more spontaneous live setting! Nelson's playing soprano sax on the album – using the instrument in an edgey way that has echoes of Coltrane, yet which also ... LP, Vinyl record album

Chico O'Farrill

Nine Flags
Impulse, 1966. Near Mint- Gatefold
Very groovy work from Chico – still very Latin at the core, but with lots of light 60s touches on top, ala the work of Gary McFarland, or some of the other groove-conscious arrangers for Verve and Impulse! Players on the set include Art Farmer, Clark Terry, JJ Johnson, Seldon Powell, and Pat ... LP, Vinyl record album
