Leon Thomas Album

LP (Item 8397) Flying Dutchman, 1970 — Condition: Very Good+
Gatefold

Leon Thomas' first album for Flying Dutchman – and one of his best ever! The vibe is very similar to his work with Pharoah Sanders – with long modal tracks that bring out the best side of Thomas' spiritual vocalizations – especially on the 17 minute track "Pharoah's Tune (The Journey)", which is worth the price of the album alone. The personal is mindblowing, too – with Billy Harper, Billy Cobham, Roy Haynes and Jerome Richardson among the players – but make no mistake, it's Leon's voice and incredible energy that makes this such a classic! Beautiful spiritual jazz vocal material, with a sound that's beyond compare! Other tracks include "Come Along", "I Am", "Bag's Groove" and "Um, Um, Um".  © 1996-2019, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Original pressing.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Wonderful work from Leon Thomas – easily one of his greatest albums ever, and a set that was recorded at the same time he was working with Pharoah Sanders! Flying Dutchman, 1973. Very Good Gatefold
A tasty compilation of Leon Thomas' work for the Flying Dutchman label – work that's clearly his best over the years, and which retains the original style of spiritual soul jazz that he pioneered with Pharoah Sanders. Joe Lee Wilson & Bond Street

What Would It Be Without You
Survival, 1975. Sealed
A really nice album by vocalist Joe Lee Wilson – a soulful, spiritual singer who didn't always make great albums! Wilson's got a mellow style of singing that's very much in the Leon Thomas tradition – and on this record, he's working with a group (and material) that really lets him hit ... LP, Vinyl record album

One of the best albums from singer Teri Thornton – a jazz vocalist who was really starting to come into her own at the beginning of the 60s, and shines here in a way that's different from some of her bigger label sets! Bethlehem, 1955. Very Good
A surprisingly great set that features Francis Faye singing jazz renditions of older folk songs – one of the first such sessions of its type (the genre would become more popular a few years later), and done with an approach that has the songs all re-tuned for a 50s modern ear by Russ Garcia, ... Copacabana
Pablo, 1979. Near Mint-
An excellent album of tunes recorded in Brazil – featuring a sweet mellow vibe that works very well with Sarah's vocals, done in a direction that we hardly expected her to take at this point! All The Sad Young Men
Verve, 1961. Very Good+
A striking session for Anita O'Day – and a refreshing change from her work of the 50s! A sweet little session of 50s vocal jazz – equally great not just for the singing by Joy Byran, but also for the arrangements by pianist Marty Paich!
