Leon Thomas Album

LP (Item 8397) Flying Dutchman, 1970 — Condition: Very Good+
Gatefold

Leon Thomas' first album for Flying Dutchman – and one of his best ever! The vibe is very similar to his work with Pharoah Sanders – with long modal tracks that bring out the best side of Thomas' spiritual vocalizations – especially on the 17 minute track "Pharoah's Tune (The Journey)", which is worth the price of the album alone. The personal is mindblowing, too – with Billy Harper, Billy Cobham, Roy Haynes and Jerome Richardson among the players – but make no mistake, it's Leon's voice and incredible energy that makes this such a classic! Beautiful spiritual jazz vocal material, with a sound that's beyond compare! Other tracks include "Come Along", "I Am", "Bag's Groove" and "Um, Um, Um".  © 1996-2019, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Original pressing. Cover has light wear.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Leon Thomas takes his vocals to new heights – moving past the straight spiritual jazz modes of his work with Pharoah Sanders, to embrace a whole host of new styles too! Flying Dutchman/Mega, 1971. Very Good+ Gatefold
A very nice live set by Leon – recorded with a great electric group that has Neal Creque on piano, Cornell Dupree on guitar, Oliver Nelson on alto, and added percussion by Sonny Morgan. Wonderful work from Leon Thomas – easily one of his greatest albums ever, and a set that was recorded at the same time he was working with Pharoah Sanders! Flying Dutchman, 1973. Near Mint- Gatefold
A tasty compilation of Leon Thomas' work for the Flying Dutchman label – work that's clearly his best over the years, and which retains the original style of spiritual soul jazz that he pioneered with Pharoah Sanders. Atlantic, 1970. Very Good+
A unique moment from the legendary Jimmy Scott – a one-off album cut for Atlantic Records – recorded after his initial 50s fame, and decades before he'd finally get his due, much later in his life! The album's got a style that's a bit more mature than Scott's initial sides – a ... LP, Vinyl record album

Johnny Hartman

Voice That Is
Impulse, 1964. Near Mint- Gatefold
At the time of this album, Johnny Hartman definitely was the voice that is – a singer with a new level of maturity for the 60s, and a voice that's far more masculine than the geeky look of the photo on the cover! Hartman's sound here is smooth and warm, but never in a too-commercial way ... LP, Vinyl record album
Stroud, 1972. Very Good
A rare one from Nina Simone – a set that was issued during her years on RCA, but on the smaller Stroud label – run by husband Andy Stroud!
