✈
❔
The first album by The Tom Tom Club – a group that started out as a side project by Talking Heads members Tina Weymouth and Chris Frantz – but which went onto have a surprising life of its own! Like the Talking Heads at the start of the 80s, Tom Tom Club were very open to pulling together rhythms from the soulful underground – bits of Caribbean influence and certainly some sounds from hip hop too – but used in these cool sing-songy tunes that also had ties to the same New York underground scene that gave the world ESG and Liquid Liquid! Yet there's also a nicely complex set of textures, too – thanks to work on the record by Adrian Belew and Steve Stanley – both of whom can balance out funky elements and more interesting textures. The record took off immediately with the track "Genius Of Love" – inspired by hip hop, and respected by that scene too – as was the album's classic "Wordy Rappinghood". The whole thing's great – an excellent document of the moment, but more timeless too – and other titles include "L'Elephant", "As Above So Below", "On On On On", "Lorelei", and "Booming & Zooming".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Cover has light wear.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Sire/Mute, 1982. Very Good
A seminal bit of pre-electro crossover – featuring the cold hard vocals of Alison Moyet, and some very tasty keyboard work! Includes the post-disco club smashes "Don't Go" and "Situation", plus "Goodbye Seventies", "Winter Kills", "Midnight", ... LP, Vinyl record album

Kid Creole & The Coconuts

Wise Guy
Sire/Ze, 1982. Near Mint-
Ha! This one really takes us back! The set was a massive breakthrough for August Darnell – one of his biggest hits since his day with Dr Buzzard's Original Savannah Band, with an equally appealing approach to the dancefloor. Tracks mix early 80s New York club styles with Darnell's mad ... LP, Vinyl record album

Impressions & Jerry Butler

Vintage Years
Sire, Mid 60s/1976. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
Nifty 2LP set that brings together a motherlode of the Impressions' best material from their ABC years – plus some of Jerry Butler's nice solo material for Mercury from the same time, and a few Curtis cuts from the early 70s. Too much to mention here, but titles include "Keep On ... LP, Vinyl record album

Wild Tchoupitoulas

Wild Tchoupitoulas
Island, 1976. Near Mint-
A great slice of New Orleans soul from the 70s – a record that replicates the "Indian" culture in the Mardi Gras scene – and which is most notable for featuring work by The Meters as well! The groove here is kind of Meters-styled funk, mixed with some fuller New Orleans mode ... LP, Vinyl record album

Tribe

Ethnic Stew
ABC, 1974. Very Good+
A great bit of funk from this obscure 70s combo – the first of their many good albums, and with a sound that's rougher and rawer than the others. The band's grooving in a pretty slow mode here – without the uptempo club tracks of later years – and they've got a style that's a mix ... LP, Vinyl record album

Shorty Long

Prime Of Shorty Long
SOUL, 1969. Near Mint-
A beautiful album from Shorty Long – issued shortly after his early death from drowning at the age of 29 – and an amazing document of the mighty soul powers he would have had in years to come! There's a depth here that Shorty never had before – a sense of power and righteousness ... LP, Vinyl record album

Irene Reid

Room For One More
Verve, 1965. Very Good+
Although Irene Reid later went on to make some recordings that had her in a more rootsy setting, this nice set from the mid 60's features her deep soul voice amidst classy jazz-based arrangements by Oliver Nelson. The record's got the feel of one of Nancy Wilson's classics for Capitol, with a mix ... LP, Vinyl record album
Capitol, 1969. Very Good+
One of the nice moments from the days when David Axelrod was producing Lou Rawls! The record's a great mix of soul and tight LA production, and features the breakbeat cut "Fa Fa Fa Fa Fa (Sad Song)". Other nice ones include "Season Of The Witch", "It's You", "I ... LP, Vinyl record album
ZTT/Island, 1983. Very Good+
Fantastic stuff – and still sounding pretty fresh today! This is the first e.p. of tracks from Art of Noise, a groundbreaking set of sound collage tracks that mixes samples, beats, and dada instrumentation into a groove that definitely set the tone for the next 10 years. The record includes ... LP, Vinyl record album

First Class

Going First Class
All Platinum, 1976. Very Good+
The one and only album from First Class – an east coast harmony group from the 70s, and one who work proudly here in some of the more uptempo styles of the time! Tracks here are often a bit extended, and filled with warmly clubby touches that are a nice All Platinum answer to the sound of ... LP, Vinyl record album

Shalamar

Big Fun
Solar, 1979. Very Good+
A definite bit of Big Fun from Shalamar – totally tight and very much at the top of their game – making the transition from disco modes to leaner 80s groove, thanks to lots of great production and songwriting help from Leon Sylvers! Sylvers was really emerging as one of the key forces ... LP, Vinyl record album
Fantasy, 1978. Very Good+
One of the greatest records ever cut by The Originals – a shift from Detroit group soul to a smoother California mode, one that really works great for their harmonies! The record was produced by Freddie Gorman and the group – and it's got some great smooth tracks that really sparkle, ... LP, Vinyl record album
