CD

Johnny Bristol first got his start at Motown – where both his songwriting skills and studio talents graced an excellent range of singles and album tracks in the late 60s – but as the 70s moved in, Bristol really became a strong singer on his own – with a fantastic sound that we'd rank right up there with the best of the period, even though Johnny never fully got his due! In a way, Bristol was a bit like Lamont Dozier – another background talent who turned out an equally fine range of records as a solo star – and like Dozier, Johnny always remained his own man throughout his solo years – never giving into easy commercial tricks, or overdone disco cliches. Instead, the man was pure class, all the way through – with an especially strong ability to hit a mellow soul groove that's maybe rivaled only by Leroy Hutson or a rare few others. This package collects together all the best of those solo cuts, most of them sweet midtempo steppers or warm mellow numbers – with titles that include "Lusty Lady", "Go On & Dream", "Memories Don't Leave Like People Do", "Have Yourself A Good Time", "She's So Amazing", "I'm Waiting On Love", "Strangers In The Dark Corners", "Love No Longer Has A Hold On Me", "Take Me Down", "Till I See You Again", "I'm So Proud Of You", "Hold ON To Love", "Do It To My Mind", and "Woman Woman".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We have only one grade for non-new CDs at Dusty Groove — "Used CD". This grade is somewhat all-encompassing, but we choose it because we try to offer Used CDs in the best shape possible.

When you purchase a Used CD you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks, the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves), and the booklet to be in good shape. Used CDs may show some signs of use but if there are significant details or defects we will list them underneath the item — just like we do with LPs — so look there for notes on cutout marks, stickers, promo stamps or other details.

All of our Used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. If you purchase a Used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly — and if it does not, then you may return it for a full refund.

Duke/Playback, Late 60s. Used
Great great work from the mighty Ernie K Doe – a legendary New Orleans singer who's best known for a few big hits – but who steps out here on some overlooked singles for Duke Records from the 60s! This material's not nearly as well known as Doe's records for the Minit and Instant label ... CD
Cadet/Playback, 1972. Used
A wonderful record from the Dells – with stellar Cadet production and arrangements by Charles Stepney! This one has a very cool way of putting the tracks together, so that there's these little "segues" in between each cut – short instrumental grooves that are actually quite ... CD

Roy C Hammond

Sex & Soul
Mercury/Playback, 1973. Used
Sex, soul, and lots more too – a sublime solo set from the great Roy C Hammond – recorded after his initial work with The Honeydrippers! The approach here is much more deep soul than his work with that group – very much in the best sort of Fame or Hi Records vibe – with a ... CD

Dynamics

Lights Out
Playback, Late 60s. Used
Overlooked genius from The Dynamics – a Detroit soul group of the 60s, and one who never fully got the fame they deserved, had they gotten some sort of bigger exposure on Motown! Yet that's what also makes these guys great, too – as they've got that tight sound that the Motor City ... CD

DJ Rogers

Hope Songs Vol 1
Hope Song/Playback, 1982. Used
DJ Rogers returns to his roots, and cuts an album that's more in a straight gospel mode than his earlier gospel-influenced soul sets! Honestly, the results are so great, we like this one just as much as the best of his secular albums – and the record's got a cohesive feel that's totally ... CD
Mercury/Playback, 1975. Used

Stax, 1973. Used
This beautiful LP was released by Stax in the early 70s, but somehow got lost in the shuffle between all the Isaac Hayes LPs. Fortunately, it was rediscovered by the international groove community about 10 years ago, and it's been at the top of everyone's playlist (and want list) ever since! This ... CD
Warner/Sundazed, 1974. Used
Brilliantly funky! This is the greatest album they cut for Warner Brothers – and it's one of the few that ever really approaches the genius of their early work for Josie. The record features the incredible breakbeat cut "Just Kissed My Baby" – worth the price of the album ... CD

Motown/Spectrum (UK), Late 60s. Used
18 tracks that sum up the genius of the Isley Brothers on Motown! By the time of the late 60s, when most of these sides were recorded, the group had already gained great fame as a strong R&B power trio – but it was their meeting with Motown that gave the Isleys the more soul-infused ... CD
