Count To Ten – The Complete Singles Collection 1968 to 1977

CD (Item 838277) Playback, Late 60s/1970s — Condition: Used
$9.99 ...

CD

One of the greatest groups to ever hit the Baltimore scene – and one who've never fully gotten their due, given that they recorded for a variety of different labels, on a career that never saw them issuing a full length LP! This set nicely corrects that fact, as it brings together cuts by the group from almost a ten year period – with a vibe that runs from late 60s harmony soul to some wonderful 70s moments that really have them stretching out, getting hip, and working through some new ideas. The group recorded much of this material in Philly and New Jersey – and get hip help from studio giants like Thom Bell, Bobby Martin, George Kerr, and Robert Banks – who create settings that are sophisticated, but really soar with the group's vocals – maybe a bit at a level that's like The Dells at their best. Titles include "Crazy About Your Love (parts 1 & 2)", "Handwriting On The Wall", "Count To Ten", "Memphis Underground", "For Your Love", "Tomorrow", "My Letter To You", "My Girl Is Made Of Candy", "There Is Beauty", "As Long As You Love Me", and "Making Up Time (parts 1 & 2)".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Still sealed.)

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We have only one grade for non-new CDs at Dusty Groove — "Used CD". This grade is somewhat all-encompassing, but we choose it because we try to offer Used CDs in the best shape possible.

When you purchase a Used CD you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks, the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves), and the booklet to be in good shape. Used CDs may show some signs of use but if there are significant details or defects we will list them underneath the item — just like we do with LPs — so look there for notes on cutout marks, stickers, promo stamps or other details.

All of our Used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. If you purchase a Used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly — and if it does not, then you may return it for a full refund.

Roy C Hammond

Sex & Soul
Mercury/Playback, 1973. Used
Sex, soul, and lots more too – a sublime solo set from the great Roy C Hammond – recorded after his initial work with The Honeydrippers! The approach here is much more deep soul than his work with that group – very much in the best sort of Fame or Hi Records vibe – with a ... CD

DJ Rogers

Hope Songs Vol 1
Hope Song/Playback, 1982. Used
DJ Rogers returns to his roots, and cuts an album that's more in a straight gospel mode than his earlier gospel-influenced soul sets! Honestly, the results are so great, we like this one just as much as the best of his secular albums – and the record's got a cohesive feel that's totally ... CD

Beginning Of The End

Nassau Funk
Alston/Playback, Early 70s. Used
Fantastic funk from Beginning Of The End – one of the coolest, grooviest, most unique funk groups of the 70s – and one who've got a real criss-crossing of styles in their sound! As you'd guess from the title, these guys hail from Nassau, in the Bahamas – but their sound is hardly ... CD

Warm & Tender Soul
Playback, Mid 60s. Used

Commodores

Nightshift
Motown, 1985. Used
By this point in their career, The Commodores have lost Lionel Richie and any sort of funk credibility they had from their early years – but they also somehow manage to reemerge with a great new talent for a sweet mellow groove! The title tune "Nightshift" was one of those tracks ... CD

Stevie Wonder

Hotter Than July
Tamla/Motown, 1980. Used
A bit smoother than early days, but still very nice and soulful – and did we expect any less from Stevie? The record's got a nicely flanged-out soul groove – with a style that kind of expands on the vocal and keyboard production of the early 70s, taking the groove towards a sound that ... CD
Epic, 1978. Used
A heavy groove and a heady title that points the way towards Michael Jackson's soon-to-be legendary solo career – all served up in a batch of tracks that resonate nicely with the Off The Wall groove! The sound here really isn't disco or club, but it's a nicely upbeat groove that shows The ... CD

Metros

Sweetest One
RCA/Dusty Groove, 1967. Used
One of the greatest Northern Soul albums ever – completely great all the way through, and filled with songs that have been burning up dancefloors for years! The vocals are incredible – soaring harmonies that hold together perfectly, even when the grooves are hard and heavy – and ... CD
Columbia, 1961. Used
The tenor sax here makes the album a standout – as John Coltrane still works with Miles Davis on 2 tracks for the record, but Blue Note stalwart Hank Mobley joins in on the rest! The approach is similar to that of the classic Coltrane/Davis years – and in a way, the record's kind of a ... CD
