One of the greatest groups to ever hit the Baltimore scene – and one who've never fully gotten their due, given that they recorded for a variety of different labels, on a career that never saw them issuing a full length LP! This set nicely corrects that fact, as it brings together cuts by the group from almost a ten year period – with a vibe that runs from late 60s harmony soul to some wonderful 70s moments that really have them stretching out, getting hip, and working through some new ideas. The group recorded much of this material in Philly and New Jersey – and get hip help from studio giants like Thom Bell, Bobby Martin, George Kerr, and Robert Banks – who create settings that are sophisticated, but really soar with the group's vocals – maybe a bit at a level that's like The Dells at their best. Titles include "Crazy About Your Love (parts 1 & 2)", "Handwriting On The Wall", "Count To Ten", "Memphis Underground", "For Your Love", "Tomorrow", "My Letter To You", "My Girl Is Made Of Candy", "There Is Beauty", "As Long As You Love Me", and "Making Up Time (parts 1 & 2)".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We have only one grade for non-new CDs at Dusty Groove — "Used CD". This grade is somewhat all-encompassing, but we choose it because we try to offer Used CDs in the best shape possible.

When you purchase a Used CD you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks, the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves), and the booklet to be in good shape. Used CDs may show some signs of use but if there are significant details or defects we will list them underneath the item — just like we do with LPs — so look there for notes on cutout marks, stickers, promo stamps or other details.

All of our Used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. If you purchase a Used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly — and if it does not, then you may return it for a full refund.

Playback, Late 70s/Early 80s. Used
Johnny Bristol first got his start at Motown – where both his songwriting skills and studio talents graced an excellent range of singles and album tracks in the late 60s – but as the 70s moved in, Bristol really became a strong singer on his own – with a fantastic sound that we'd ... CD
Mercury/Playback, 1975. Used
Definitely something nice from the great Roy C – one of the overlooked soul singer's great 70s albums for Mercury – all of which are ripe for rediscovery by a younger generation! This one's slightly different than the rest, in that the album was recorded at the Dynamic Studios in ... CD

Roy C Hammond

Sex & Soul
Mercury/Playback, 1973. Used
Sex, soul, and lots more too – a sublime solo set from the great Roy C Hammond – recorded after his initial work with The Honeydrippers! The approach here is much more deep soul than his work with that group – very much in the best sort of Fame or Hi Records vibe – with a ... CD

Dynamics

Lights Out
Playback, Late 60s. Used
Overlooked genius from The Dynamics – a Detroit soul group of the 60s, and one who never fully got the fame they deserved, had they gotten some sort of bigger exposure on Motown! Yet that's what also makes these guys great, too – as they've got that tight sound that the Motor City ... CD

DJ Rogers

Hope Songs Vol 1
Hope Song/Playback, 1982. Used
DJ Rogers returns to his roots, and cuts an album that's more in a straight gospel mode than his earlier gospel-influenced soul sets! Honestly, the results are so great, we like this one just as much as the best of his secular albums – and the record's got a cohesive feel that's totally ... CD
Epic, 1990s. Used
A great look at the post-Motown work of Teena Marie – her 80s years on Epic Records, a time when she was charting big with a wonderfully seductive approach to soul! Marie's definitely in charge of her groove here – writing, arranging, and producing most of the work on the set – ... CD

Prince

Purple Rain
Warner, 1984. Used
One of the greatest crossover albums of the 80s – and the record that catapulted Prince very firmly into the mainstream! There's a tightness here that surpasses even that of Prince's early classics for Warner Brothers – an unabashed love of a pop hook that makes for some incredibly ... CD

En Vogue

Funky Divas
Atlantic/East West, 1992. Used
Funky Divas is right – as this classic album by En Vogue is one that had the group really redefining the sound of girl group soul for a whole new generation! The girls do a wonderful job of blending together hip hop beats and warmer mainstream soul – at a level that marked one of the ... CD

Yvonne Fair

Bitch Is Black
Tamla/Reel Music, 1975. Used
Heavy heavy funk from the mighty Yvonne Fair – a 70s bad soul sister that we'd rank right up there with Betty Davis! Yvonne got her start working with James Brown in a sweeter mode, but by the time of this mid 70s debut, she'd hit a really hard-wailing sort of style – one that had the ... CD
Back Beat/Reel Music, Late 60s. Used
A beautiful early record from OV Wright – recorded with stone Memphis production by Willie Mitchell, and a beautiful sound that's more open and relaxed than some of Wright's other records – not as tightly "fixed" or polished as his other work, no matter how great that might be! ... CD
Columbia/Reel Music/P&C, Early 70s. Used
Amazing rare soul from Gwen McCrae – little-known material recorded for Columbia records in the years before her later 70s fame at TK! The style here is nice and rootsy – very southern soul in its approach, even more so than Gwen's earliest work at TK – thanks, perhaps, to less ... CD
