A great example of the Kenton powerhouse in action – a 90 minute double-live recording that really set a new standard for jazz sets of its type! The album features a side apiece dedicated to each of the three acts – one by Kenton's orchestra, one by Christy on vocals, and one by the Four Freshmen – the latter two supported by Kenton's group on their own sides, then joining together for a final fourth side that features all artists together. The approach is a great one – very vibrant, and certainly crowd-pleasing – and titles include "Artistry In Rhythm", "My Old Flame", "I Want To Be Happy", "Midnight Sun", "Day In Day Out", "Angel Eyes", and "Love For Sale". (Rainbow label pressing, in the gatefold cover with booklet.)  © 1996-2015, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

After Dark
Capitol, 1955. Very Good+
An excellent album by Marian McPartland – a bit "high concept", but that's what makes it work! Marian's usually sleepy trio is augmented by cello and harp – and instead of turning the record into a snooze fest, the added strings actually give it a slightly darker quality than ... Domination
Capitol, 1965. Very Good
A key meeting of Cannonball Adderley and David Axelrod – and one of the pair's first larger collaborations together! Atlantic, 1964. Very Good
A cool cooker from altoist Hank Crawford – cut in a tightly-grooving ensemble mode that really reflects his roots with Ray Charles! Swiss Movement
Atlantic, 1969. Very Good
The extremely successful union of two of Atlantic's biggest funky jazz stars, caught live in Switzerland, with the amazing Benny Bailey sitting in on trumpet. The tracks are long and funky, and are virtually a blueprint for pop soul jazz playing of the time – mixing slinky rhythms with some ... LP, Vinyl record album

Gettin It Together
TCB, Early 60s/Early 70s. Very Good+
One of those great sessions that was originally issued on the Warwick label during the early 60s, and repackaged with less notes during the early 70s. As with most of the Warwick jazz sessions, this one's excellent – and features a mixture of hardbop and soul jazz modernism that's totally in ... LP, Vinyl record album
