David Murray & James Newton Quintet

CD (Item 832576) DIW (Japan), 1991 — Condition: Used
Gatefold
Out Of Stock

CD

✈
A really beautiful pairing of horns – the flute of James Newton and tenor of David Murray – working here in a mix of lyrical modes and heavier spiritual avant styles! The rest of the group features John Hicks on piano, Fred Hopkins on bass, and either Andrew Cyrille or Billy Hart on drums, depending on the tracks.  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We only use the grade "Used CD" for non-new CDs. This all-encompassing grade was chosen it because we only buy and offer used CDs in the best possible condition.

When you purchase a used CD you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks, the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves), and the booklet to be in good shape. Used CDs may show some signs of use, but if there are significant details or defects we will describe the item's condition (just like we do with LPs), so look for notes on cutout marks, stickers, promo stamps or other details before ordering.

All of our used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. After you receive a used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly. If it does not, you can request a return for a full refund.

David Murray Quartet

Ballads For Bass Clarinet
DIW (Japan), 1991. Used
One of the greatest jazz voices on the bass clarinet – save perhaps for the late Eric Dolphy – working here in a wonderful batch of ballads and gentle groovers! The set's quite different from the usual jazz date to bear "ballads" in the title – as David Murray's not ... CD
DIW (Japan), 1990. Used
Possibly the best entry in Art Ensemble Of Chicago's Dreaming Of The Masters series – as the set's devoted to the work of John Coltrane, and has a really unified feel throughout! About half the tunes are Coltrane compositions, and the rest are originals by the Art Ensemble – done with ... CD

Art Ensemble Of Chicago

Alternate Express
DIW (Japan), 1989. Used
Don't let the "alternate" in the title fool you, because it's not like the Art Ensemble Of Chicago are getting all alt-rock or anything – nor is the album a set of alternate takes! Instead, the album's one of their best from the time – a well-crafted set of tunes, recorded in ... CD

Contemporary Piano Ensemble

Key Players
DIW/Columbia, 1993. Used
The title's a bit of a silly joke, but the album's a really great one – a five-pianist effort that features Donald Brown, Harold Mabern, Mulgrew Miller, James Williams, and Geoff Keezer on the keys – all stepping off from some great rhythm from Christian McBride on bass and Tony Reedus ... CD

Strata Institute

Transmigration
DIW/Columbia, 1991. Used
Easily one of the best M-Base related sessions for DIW from the early 90s – and certainly one that's the most free from the dated touches of the others! The real strength here is the strong saxophone work – done by Von Freeman on tenor, and both Steve Coleman and Greg Osby on alto ... CD

The trio here is a great one – Mulgrew Miller on piano, Reggie Workman on bass, and Freddie Waits on drums – joined by some great alto from Oliver Lake! CD

Denny Zeitlin & George Marsh

Telepathy
Sunnyside, 2021. Used
