An album with a surprisingly soulful sound – especially if you only know the earlier work of Elliott Sharp – as the group's got a fully-formed sense of flow that really helps balance out some of their angles and edges! The bottom end is what really seems to hold things together here – especially the bass of Brad Jones and trombone of Terry Greene – which almost seem to set free the reed lines from Sharp, the trumpet of Taylor Ho Bynum, and drums and percussion of Barry Altschul. All compositions are by Sharp, but have a very collaborative vibe overall – and titles include "Oh See", "Firn Away", "We Control The Horizontal", "Off Objekt", and "BBB".  © 1996-2017, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We have only one grade for non-new CDs at Dusty Groove — "Used CD". This grade is somewhat all-encompassing, but we choose it because we try to offer Used CDs in the best shape possible. All of our Used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. If you purchase a Used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly — and if it does not, then you may return it for a full refund.

With our Used CDs, you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks — clean, and not dirty at all. You can also expect the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves — putting fresh cases on Used CDs we handle) — and you can expect the booklet to be in good shape, unless noted otherwise. We will list any specific details/defects underneath the item — so look for notes on cutout marks in the case, stamps on the barcode, or details like that.

The title might be a bit of a joke, but the music here is something else entirely – tremendously well-formed, well-played work from a group headed by bassist Mark Dresser – who also wrote all the material on the set! There's almost an AACM vibe to the whole thing – a mixture of ... CD

Loose, open, longform sounds from this really great quartet – a well-matched lineup that features Steve Swell on trombone, Gebhard Ullmann on tenor and bass clarinet, Michael Zerang on drums, and Fred Lonberg-Holm on cello and electronics! The music has some of that spacious feel of some of ... CD

One of the headiest Peter Brotzmann albums we've heard in years, thanks to the sound of the Black Bombaim group from Portugal – who play with a guitar-heavy drive that almost takes us back to Brotzmann's Last Exit recordings of the 80s! The group play with a forward energy that takes off ... CD

Originally a 2LP set, but now a 4CD package – with 14 previously unissued tracks! Legendary early live work from Miles Davis – one of the first examples on record of the way that Davis could really stretch out in a concert setting! The music's a bit more straight ahead than later live ... CD
