Classic 80s funk from Xavier – a group led by bassist Ernest Smith, who'd already had plenty of practice working with Isaac Hayes, The Midnight Movers, and The Coasters during their funky late 60s years! The groove here is similar to some of the other tight funk groups on Liberty at the time – especially Dayton – but Xavier's groove is a bit leaner, too – very nicely turned towards a modern dancefloor with its emphasis on bass upfront in the mix, in a mode that's often nicely placed between boogie and rollerskating jams! Ayanna Little sings lead vocals with Xavier – and the set also features some wicked keyboard work from Rahni Harris – on tracks that include "What Goes Around", "Truly Devoted", "Work That Sucker To Death", and "Love Is On The One".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We have only one grade for non-new CDs at Dusty Groove — "Used CD". This grade is somewhat all-encompassing, but we choose it because we try to offer Used CDs in the best shape possible.

When you purchase a Used CD you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks, the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves), and the booklet to be in good shape. Used CDs may show some signs of use but if there are significant details or defects we will list them underneath the item — just like we do with LPs — so look there for notes on cutout marks, stickers, promo stamps or other details.

All of our Used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. If you purchase a Used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly — and if it does not, then you may return it for a full refund.

Philip Bailey

Continuation
Columbia/PTG (Netherlands), 1983. Used
An 80s soul classic from Philip Bailey – stepping out here from Earth Wind & Fire in a set that has him sparkling strongly as a solo act! The vocals still have that trademark Bailey sound – a wonderful range that's never overdone, and which seems to shine especially well on the ... CD
Mercury/PTG (Netherlands), 1983. Used
The Gap Band are definitely Jammin on this sweet little set from the early 80s – hitting that fierce funk mode they do so well, with lots of snapping lines at the bottom of the rhythms! The style is trademark Gap all the way through – a percolated approach to funk that's tight, but ... CD

Starpoint

Starpoint
Casablanca/PTG (Netherlands), 1980. Used
Lean and grooving funk steeped soul from Starpoint – with more of a lively, Earth-based instrumental groove than some of the more drum machine and synth soaked albums that beamed out of the Starpoint spaceship later on in the 80s! This is their first album on Casablanca – a funky bit ... CD

Starpoint

Wanting You
Chocolate City/PTG (France), 1981. Used
Massive work from Starpoint – the kind of all-great record that few other groups of their era could hope to match! The set's got way more going on than usual the usual 80s groove (although that's very firmly in place too) – and steps out with a tightness and sense of presence that ... CD

Con Funk Shun

Loveshine
Mercury/PTG (Netherlands), 1978. Used
Funky genius from Con Funk Shun – working here under the production helm of Skip Scarborough, who seems to give them an even sharper edge than usual! The album's filled with those tightly compressed rhythms that Skip was so great in producing back in the 70s – grooves that seem to make ... CD

Oattes Van Schaik (The Limit)

Limit (aka Love Attaxx)
Portrait/PTG (Netherlands), 1985. Used
Dutch soul, but with plenty of help from US talents – including Gwen Guthrie on vocals and David Sanborn on saxes! Oattes Van Schaik is actually the duo of Bernard Oattes and Rob Van Shaik – and the album was originally issued under the group name of The Limit in Europe, which was then ... CD

Kool & The Gang

Everybody's Dancin'
De-Lite/PTG (Netherlands), 1978. Used
Kool & The Gang sounding super-tight, but mighty right as well – a groove that still has all the great jazz elements of their mid 70s records, but which also has them picking up the bassy bottom a bit more too! The sound is not nearly as slick as their 80s hits – and instead still ... CD

Tavares

Future Bound
Capitol/PTG (Netherlands), 1978. Used
Tavares are at the height of their early career here – stepping out in a set of smooth soul tunes arranged by hitmeister Freddie Perren – the standout of which is the group's major disco classic "More Than A Woman"! That tune actually manages to outshine most of the other ... CD

Starpoint

It's So Delicious
PTG/Vinyl Masterpiece, 1983. Used
A bit tighter and more conventional soul than earlier work by Starpoint, but still pretty darn great too – and great proof that the group were more on top of their bag than other funky combos of the type! Renee Diggs is strongly out front on vocals throughout – lending her sweet sound ... CD
Full Time/PTG (Netherlands), 1982. Used
