Excellent hard bop sides from Red Garland, originally recorded for the Prestige label and issued on the albums High Pressure, Dig It and Soul Burnin'. Featuring either Donald Byrd and John Coltrane or Richard Williams and Oliver Nelson up front and George Joyner and Arthur Taylor or Peck Morrison and Charlie Persip in the rhythm section, these sides crackle with a wonderful inventiveness that reveals why Garland played alongside 'Trane onso many classic sides from this era. 9 tracks in all, most nice lengthy takes where everyone gets a chance to stretch out, including "Two Bass Hit", "Billie's Bounce", "Solitude", "Lazy Mae" and "On Green Dolphin Street". (Cover has a promo stamp & light wear.)  © 1996-2017, Dusty Groove, Inc.

We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

A great session from Red Garland – recorded in the early 80s with support from Ahmad Jamal's old trio-mates – Jamil Nassar on bass and Frank Gant on drums! The Garland heard here is a gentler one than on his earlier recordings – playing with a nice Jamal-like sense of spacious ... LP, Vinyl record album

One of those 70s two-fers where Prestige went back and decided dicing up all those sessions in the 50s and 60s didn't make as much sense as issuing them as the way they went down. As such, this set collects work from one long blowing session, which eventually saw the light of day as two separate ... LP, Vinyl record album

Jazzland, 1961. Near Mint-
Bright, breezy, and plenty darn soulful – a nice little post-Prestige album that almost has Red Garland returning to the piano with the tightest focus of his earlier years! Great work from our favorite period in Willis Jackson's career – really hard-burning material that helped set a new standard for the organ/tenor sound in soul jazz! Sublime Hammond from the amazing Leon Spencer – heard here at the height of his younger years, when he was cooking up as much magic in the studio as Johnny Hammond or Charles Earland – and really stretching things out, in ways that take the jazz organ format much farther than the giants ... A very striking album – one of Ray Bryant's most noteworthy of the time!
