One of the greatest albums ever from trombonist Roswell Rudd – an early Impulse Records session, cut right at a time when Rudd was a crucial part of the New York "new thing" scene in the 60s! The album's almost more of an ESP session from its lineup – which includes Giuseppi Logan on flute and bass clarinet, Robin Kenyatta on alto sax, Charlie Haden and Lewis Worrell on bass, and Beaver Harris on drums – yet the overall feel of the record has more of the control and sense of vision we've come to love on Impulse – the mix of structure and freedom you might find in crucial 60s recordings by Marion Brown or Archie Shepp on the label – particularly the latter's Fire Music generation! Titles include "Respects", "Satan's Dance", "Everywhere", and "Yankee No How". (Orange and black label stereo pressing. Vinyl plays with a short click on side 1, track 1.)  © 1996-2015, Dusty Groove, Inc.

We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

This Rather Than That
Impulse, 1969. Very Good Gatefold
Probably the best of Buddy's solo albums, with a tight little group that features Mel Rhyne, Jodie Christian, and his brother Monk – all coming together in a messed up style of funky jazz! Impulse, 1971. Very Good Gatefold
One of the great recordings that Yusef Lateef made when pianist Mike Nock was in his group. Nock, at this point, had a great rhythmic feel, and he gives Lateef's compositions a great modal sound that's similar to his work with the Three Out trio in Australia. Tracks include "Try Love", ... Original 10" LP featuring the great alto player amidst a lineup that includes 3 west coast trombonists, and a west coast rhythm section with Claude Williamson, Joe Mondragon, and Shelly Manne. Beyond The Blue Horizon
CTI, 1970. Sealed Gatefold
A great early CTI session by George Benson, and one of the most stripped-down, straight-ahead funky records he did for the label! There's a sharpness here that's different than the larger feel of some of Benson 's later records – a sound that almost links back to his soul jazz roots in the ... LP, Vinyl record album
