LP (Item 824530) Delmark, Early 50s — Condition: Sealed
With selections by Jimmy Forrest, Teddy Brandon with Ray Abrams, Cozy Eggleston, Jimmy Coe, Doc Sausage and Earl Johnson, Fred Jackson, Fats Noel, and Paul Bascomb.  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Sealed

This is what it says, that the record is still held fast in shrink-wrap. We tend to be pretty suspicious about these things, so if the shrink-wrap doesn't look original, or if the record seems to have undergone some damage over time, we'll probably take it out of the wrapper to ensure that it's in good shape — which is why we don't have more of these. In some cases the shrink-wrap may be torn in spots, but if it's not possible the record has been taken out and played, the record will still qualify as "Sealed".

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Jimmy Forrest

Night Train (Delmark)
Delmark, Early 50s. Very Good+
Excellent work from this hard-blowing St Louis tenorist – a figure who started in more R&B-styled material, but also helped open the door for soul jazz modes in the 60s! The work here predates Jimmy's well-remembered records for Prestige – as the package features early material cut ... LP, Vinyl record album

Barney Bigard & Art Hodes' All Star Stompers

Bucket's Got A Hole In It
Delmark, 1968. Very Good+
(7 West Grand pressing. Cover has light wear.) LP, Vinyl record album

George Lewis & Don Ewell

Reunion
Delmark, 1966. Sealed
With Lewis on clarinet, Ewell on piano, Jim Robinson on trombone, and Cie Frazier on drums. LP, Vinyl record album

Archie Shepp & The New York Contemporary 5

Archie Shepp In Europe
Delmark, 1963. Very Good+
Incredible work from one of the greatest groups of the New York avant scene of the 60s! This French set (probably from the late 60s or early 70s) brings live tracks recorded in Copenhagen in 1963 – and which rarely every show up in any form, even on reissue. The group features Shepp, Don ... LP, Vinyl record album

Herbie Mann & The Afro-Jazz Sextet + Four Trumpets

Common Ground
Atlantic, 1960. Very Good
A great little record, filled with loads of cross-cultural influences that make for one of the most exotic Herbie Mann albums of the 60s! The group's billed as the Afro-Jazz Sextet– but has a strong Latin vibe as well – a bit of an echo of the experiments Herbie Mann did with Latin ... LP, Vinyl record album

Thelonious Monk

Brilliant Corners
Riverside, 1956. Near Mint-
A brilliant title for this brilliant album from Thelonious Monk – a set that really has him coming back strongly in the second half of the 50s – with a new talent for arrangements that really goes past his previous work! Monk's piano and compositions are every bit as great as before ... LP, Vinyl record album

Bobbi Humphrey

Tailor Made
Epic, 1977. Very Good
Sure, it's after the Blue Note/Larry Mizell years – but Bobbi's still kicking ass! Instead of Larry Mizell, Bobbi's working with Skip Scarborough – and she's hitting a groove that's a bit smoother and more modern than before, but every bit as sweetly funky and seriously soulful. Bobbi ... LP, Vinyl record album

Milt Jackson & Coleman Hawkins

Bean Bags
Atlantic, 1958. Near Mint-
A wonderful little record – a real standout in both the careers of Milt Jackson and Coleman Hawkins! The album captures Hawk during his great later years – that time when his sound was even more soulful and inventive than ever – with lots of odd modern undercurrents that really ... LP, Vinyl record album

Yusef Lateef

Complete Yusef Lateef
Atlantic, 1968. Very Good-
A soulful late 60s outing for Brother Yusef – one of his first, and one of his best, albums for Atlantic! Despite the misleading title, this isn't really the "complete" Yusef Lateef (it would have to be a 50 LP set for that!) – but the record is a nice slice of Yusef's ... LP, Vinyl record album
Riverside, 1960. Very Good-
Fantastic work from the Cannonball Adderley Quintet – one of their greatest performances from the seminal early 60s years! The band at this time includes Cannon on alto, Nat on cornet, Victor Feldman on piano, Sam Jones on bass, and Louis Hayes on drums – and although Feldman's not as ... LP, Vinyl record album
Atlantic, 1962. Very Good
Herbie Mann's at the Village Gate – really wailing away in a set of extended numbers that not only set a whole new standard for live recording in jazz, but which also pushed forward the role of the flute in the music as well! There's a heck of a lot of soul in the grooves here – served ... LP, Vinyl record album
Vee Jay, 1962. Near Mint-
Forget the title – which sounds like a bit of a gimmick – as this is a fine fine Eddie Harris album! After the success that Vee Jay had with Eddie Harris' huge hit version of "Exodus", they cut this album of Eddie playing movie themes – like "Green Dolphin ... LP, Vinyl record album
