LP, Vinyl record album

One of the Jazz Crusaders' classic funky live sets from the 60's, recorded live at the Lighthouse, where there talents were slowly becoming the stuff of legend. Nice tight soul jazz stuff, with some excellent groovers that include an early version of "Scratch", plus "Blues Up Tight", "Miss It", and "Doin' That Thing". Longish tracks, with good drawn-out solos, and a totally heavy groove! (Cover has light wear.)  © 1996-2017, Dusty Groove, Inc.

We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Pacific Jazz, Mid 60s. Very Good
Nothing fancy – but some great short little soul jazz numbers that show The Jazz Crusaders grooving at their early best! The tenor of Wilton Felder, trombone of Wayne Henderson, and piano of Joe Sample really carry the set – and the album's got some great originals that include "Pu ... LP, Vinyl record album
Lookin' Ahead
Pacific Jazz, 1962. Good
A classic hard groover from this great soul jazz combo! The band are in perfect early form, and they wail nicely on some tight tight tight little tracks that virtually define the LA soul jazz sound of the 60s. Includes classics like "Young Rabbits" and "Big Hunk Of Funk" ... LP, Vinyl record album
Blue Note/Pacific Jazz, 1963. Very Good
Nice, mellow, and very groovy! Joe Pass plays here with the piano and organ of Clare Fischer, who's always one of our favorites – a player who manages to turn any session into something more than it appears at face value – thanks to a strong sense of craft and cleverness! Clare's ... LP, Vinyl record album
Pacific Jazz, 1960. Very Good-
Nice early trio side by McCann and co., with Leroy Vinegar on bass and Ron Jefferson on drums. Sweet, sanctified soul jazz with a nice rolling groove throughout. Includes "Vacushna", "Fish This Week, But Next Week Chitlings", and, of course, "The Truth". LP, Vinyl record album
Pacific Jazz, 1966. Near Mint- Gatefold
A hard and heavy side from Buddy, and true to his reputation and the title of the LP, he comes out swinging! The set features a top notch mid 60s group, and from the sound of the numbers on this set, ol' Buddy did need to hand out any of his famous lectures on the bus afterwards, with some crisp ... People
Pacific Jazz, Early 60s. Near Mint-
One of our favorite records ever by Roy Haynes – a lyrical masterpiece that stands with his best work of the 60s! The set features some wonderful playing by Frank Strozier – who's handling both alto and flute on the set, grooving around like he did on his own great Riverside albums of ... LP, Vinyl record album
Picture Of Heath
Pacific Jazz, 1956. Near Mint-
That's "Heath", not "health" – as you might think the title's misspelled – as in Jimmy Heath, who arranged most of the numbers on the set! Heath's contribution is a good one too – as it helps Baker create one of his most tightly-wrapped albums of the time, a ... LP, Vinyl record album
Portraits
Pacific Jazz, Mid 60s. Near Mint-
An excellent album from Gerald Wilson – one that features some of his most inventive writing and arranging to date! The album's a perfect balance between the two sides of LA jazz in the 60s – the soul jazz groove, and the growing modern scene – which often didn't get the larger ... LP, Vinyl record album
After Hours
Pacific Jazz, 1962. Very Good+
An obscure early one from Groove Holmes! Despite the title, this one's actually a nice batch of pretty groovy tracks – played by Groove with two different trios, both of which give him plenty of room to stretch out, and prove that he always worked best in smaller ensembles! Lots of nice ... LP, Vinyl record album
Spunky
Pacific Jazz, Early 60s. Very Good-
Easily one of the best of Monty Alexander's early albums – and a nicely-grooving set of soul jazz numbers with a bouncy, bass-y finish! The core group on most of the set features Paul Humphrey on drums and Victor Gaskin on bass – but a few cuts have some added guitar, used mostly for ... LP, Vinyl record album
Pacific Jazz, Early 50s. Very Good-
A full LP that collects together earlier recordings by Mulligan – done in the years 1952 and 1953, with a quartet that features Chet Baker, and bass by either Carson Smith or Bob Whitlock, and drums by either Larry Bunker or Chico Hamilton. Both Mulligan and Baker recorded together a number ... LP, Vinyl record album
My Mother's Eyes
Pacific Jazz, 1963. Very Good+
A rare one for Sonny Stitt – an album for Pacific Jazz recorded on the west coast, but done with some hard-burning organ work by Charles Kynard that easily matches any of Stitt's best soul jazz sides from the east! There's a tightly cooking feel to the entire set that's really great – ... LP, Vinyl record album
