A cool set by an artist who's clearly influenced by all the older trippy styles issued by the Pharaway Sounds label – especially that imprint's strong focus on fuzzy psych from the Mid-East! In fact, the overall sound of this set's so cool, you could easily pass it off as some lost Turkish rock from the 70s – as there's just the right sort of psych guitar lines and local instrumental currents to take us back to the glory days of the Anatolian scene – right down to the percussion, which is free of any too-contemporary modes that might hurt the pedigree of the sound. A few cuts pick up some of the slight electro elements that were in the early 80s Turkish scene – and titles include "Hayat Bu Malum", "Belki Son Kez", "Ne Diyeyim", "Dubb I Akbar", "John Dere", and "Destur III". (Hype sticker is peeled.)  © 1996-2017, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Sealed

This is what it says, that the record is still held fast in shrink-wrap. We tend to be pretty suspicious about these things, so if the shrink-wrap doesn't look original, or if the record seems to have undergone some damage over time, we'll probably take it out of the wrapper to ensure that it's in good shape — which is why we don't have more of these. In some cases the shrink-wrap may be torn in spots, but if it's not possible the record has been taken out and played, the record will still qualify as "Sealed".

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Celluloid, 1985. Sealed
Pretty great work from Toure Kunda – one of the best of the New Africa acts to record for Celluloid during the 80s! The album's got a bit of electro modernism in the mix, thanks to production by Bill Laswell – and guest keyboards by Bernie Worrell. The overall sound is very tight, and ... LP, Vinyl record album

An incredible record – even if it was a worldwide hit! Before this one came out, Manu was a funky sax player grooving away in Cameroun, cutting tight but obscure soulful sides. In 1972, though, he exploded with the track "Soul Makossa" – a choppy hard-riffing number that ... LP, Vinyl record album

An early gem from the great guitarist Paco DeLucia – and one of the first to feature his solo instrument right out front in the mix, without support from another player or any large arrangements! A pretty strong Afro Funk act from Ghana – one that probably got more exposure than usual, thanks to the fact that they were taken under the wing of Brian Eno, who produced the album, in a tradition that would stretch back to Ginger Baker's work with Fela.
