Percussion Discussion (Tough/Max)

LP (Item 81579) Chess/Cadet/Argo, 1957/1958 — Condition: Very Good+
2LP Gatefold
A 70s issue of 2 late 50s hard bop sides released by Argo and Cadet. Though the title and packaging might lead you to believe Max and Art are performing side by side, it's really just two albums slapped together, and not necessarily inappropriately, in a gatefold sleeve to sell easily. The first set is Blakey's Tough, one of those obscure sessions recorded during the years after the time he and Horace Silver split, with a transitional early lineup of the Jazz Messengers featuring Jackie McLean and Bill Hardman up front with Sam Dockery and Spanky DeBrest filling out the rhythm section. Included are a swinging Gershwin medley and two Duke Jordan tunes "Scotch Blues" and the classic "Flight to Jordu". Max's sides were issued as Max, a killer set of bop tracks recorded by Max with Hank Mobley and Kenny Dorham – plus a guest appearance by Ramsey Lewis on piano, in one of his few non-Chicago, non-trio sides! The record's got that great kind of energy that Roach could hit when he really was kicking his group into gear – and although the overall approach is mostly hard bop, there's plenty going on under the surface. Tracks include "CM", "Four X", "Crackle Hut", and "Speculate".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Kenny Burrell

Tender Gender
Cadet, 1966. Near Mint-
Straight, strong, and soulful sounds from guitarist Kenny Burrell – quite possibly one of his best albums of the 60s, thanks to a really well-focused sound throughout! The groove here is nice and tight – a cooking little rhythm section that features Richard Wyands on piano, Martin ... LP, Vinyl record album

John Klemmer

Involvement
Cadet, 1967. Near Mint-
Beautiful early work from John Klemmer – one of the most under-rated talents of his generation, and a great player who frequently gets overlooked because of his later, smoother work. This album is Klemmer's first – recorded with a soulful Chicago tenor sound, touched with some of the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Bunky Green

Playin' For Keeps
Cadet, 1966. Near Mint-
Tremendous work from an alto player with a very unique conception – a player who was unlike Charlie Parker, Sonny Stitt, or some of his precursors on the instrument – and instead really took off in bold new directions, like Lou Donaldson or fellow Chicagoan Sonny Cox in the mid 60s! ... Kenny Burrell

Ode To 52nd Street
Cadet, 1967. Near Mint-
A really wonderful Chess/Cadet session from the 60s – not the bop-styled record you might expect from the 52nd Street reference in the title! Instead, the whole thing's more of a cool Chicago take on soul jazz – with these great large arrangements from Richard Evans, backing strong ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ramsey Lewis

Movie Album
Cadet, Mid 60s. Very Good+ Gatefold
Jazzy and classy – and one of the first of Ramsey's albums to feature him working with larger arrangements instead of the usual trio. In this case, the whole thing was arranged and conducted by Richard Evans – with a spacey hip sound that's not too far from some of Ramsey's later work ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ramsey Lewis

Goin' Latin
Cadet, 1966. Very Good+
Goin Latin, and goin groovy too – thanks to some wonderful arrangements from Chicago soul legend Richard Evans – who really helps Ramsey Lewis open up his sound on the set! The format's less straight Latin than you might expect from the title – and Evans brings in a bouncing, ... LP, Vinyl record album
Cadet, 1960s. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
A very nicely selected 2LP set of tracks from Stitt's oft-overlooked years at Argo/Chess! The tracks have him in great company that includes the pianists Barry Harris, John Young, and Ronnie Matthews – and if you know Stitt's style from the time, you know that his choice of piano player made ... Sonny Stitt

Burnin
Argo, Early 60s. Very Good
A great lost gem from Sonny Stitt – one of his most obscure sides for Argo, recorded with a no-nonsense quartet that included Barry Harris on piano, William Austin on bass, and Frank Gant on drums – all on the day after the trio worked together on Harris' Breakin It Up session for the ... LP, Vinyl record album
Argo, 1964. Very Good+
A killer live set from Ramsey Lewis and his classic early 60s trio – a record that's not nearly as well known as The In Crowd, but every bit as great! Drummer Red Holt and bassist Eldee Young really get in some great elements here – working with Ramsey's piano in a groove that's far ... LP, Vinyl record album

Lou Donaldson

Rough House Blues
Cadet, 1964. Very Good+
One of Lou's more unique sides of the 60s – as the album features him as the main soloist over arrangements by a group headed up by Oliver Nelson. As has been ably demonstrated on many sides on labels like Verve, Impulse, and Capitol – there's no better talent than Nelson for taking a ... LP, Vinyl record album

Shirley Scott

Queen Of The Organ
Impulse, 1964. Near Mint- Gatefold
Classic Hammond work from female organ legend Shirley Scott – in her best mode of the 60s! Here's the reasons: 1) The group features husband Stanley Turrentine on tenor, adding in some nice extra tones to Shirley's usual trio! 2 ) The rhythm section is Bob Cranshaw and Otis Finch – ...
