Great Moments With Charles Mingus

LP (Item 81116) MCA/Impulse, 1960s — Condition: Near Mint-
2LP
Originally: 16.99
A great collection of Mingus' Impulse sides: "Orange Was The Color Of Her Dress, Then Silk Blues", "The Black Saint & The Sinner Lady: Solo Dance/Duet Solo Dancer/Group Dancers", "The Black Saint & The Sinner Lady: Trio & Group Dancers/Single Solos & Group Dance/Group & Solo Dance", "Meditations For Moses", "II BS", "IX Love", "Celia", "Mood Indigo", "Better Get Hit In Yo Soul", "Theme For Lester Young", "Hora Decubitus", "Roland Kirk's Message" and "Memories Of You".  © 1996-2022, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Early 80s issue. Cover has light wear and a cutout notch.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Charles Mingus

Something Like A Bird
Atlantic, 1978. Near Mint-
One of the last albums Charles Mingus ever gave us – before departing this planet way way too soon! The set shows the increasing sophistication of Mingus' music in these later years – a mode that almost echoes the path that Duke Ellington would take in his final decade – a move ... Up Front, 1954. Near Mint-
70s repackaging of one of Mingus's great Bethlehem sessions from the 50s, originally released as The Jazz Experiments Of Charlie Mingus. The great one's playing here in the company of John LaPorta, Teo Macero, Thad Jones, Jackson Wiley, and Clem De Rosa. Only 3 of the orignal tracks are included ... LP, Vinyl record album

Charles Mingus

Me Myself An Eye
Atlantic, 1979. Near Mint-
Complicated later work from Charles Mingus – a great illustration of the way his power to command a large ensemble never wavered as the years went on! Jazz Workshop/Fantasy, 1964. Near Mint-
Great live work by Mingus – recorded around the same vintage as his Town Hall Concert, or as some of his sublime European recordings from the 1964 tour. The group is late and hip – with Charles McPherson as the "saxophonist of tomorrow", plus Jaki Byard on piano, Lonnie ... LP, Vinyl record album

Charles Mingus

Oh Yeah
Atlantic, 1962. Near Mint-
Quite a crazy little record from Charles Mingus – a record that fits nicely in his legacy of other recordings for Atlantic, but which has a very different approach! On this set, Mingus plays piano, and even sings a bit – using this messed-up take on blues roots, but filtered through a ... LP, Vinyl record album

John Coltrane

Om
Impulse, 1965. Very Good- Gatefold
A pure statement of being and essence – and one of John Coltrane's spiritual masterpieces from the 60s! The 1965 recording was one of Trane's most adventurous so far – as it featured just one album-length track, building up out of relatively free expressions from Coltrane in the studio ... Deodato

Whirlwinds
MCA, 1974. Near Mint- Gatefold
Sweet keyboard soul from Deodato – a set that steps off nicely from the strengths of his big hits on CTI, hitting a similarly flowing groove that's really great! The instrumentation here is a bit more expanded than before, but never in a way that buries the keyboards – and Deodato's ... LP, Vinyl record album
Impulse, 1972. Near Mint-
A classic compilation of material from the hip later years of Impulse – put together with a title that's a bit misleading, given that some of this stuff was clearly getting some play on underground FM radio! There's some key righteous classics here – like "Attica Blues" and ... LP, Vinyl record album

Milt Jackson & Ray Brown

That's The Way It Is
Impulse, 1969. Very Good+ Gatefold
At the end of the 60s, Milt Jackson and Ray Brown cut some very groovy records together – teamed up in a great pairing of styles that pushed both of them way past the more standard sounds of earlier years! Swing Low, Sweet Cadillac
Impulse, 1967. Very Good Gatefold
A brilliant album of Latiny grooves from Diz!
