Our only complaint about this set is that Prestige only saw fit to make it 2 LPs long, and as most of all of you know just as well as we do, the Prestige catalog runs deep with funky hornsmen! Most of these cats and the tracks they did choose to include need little or no introduction form us, so we'll just let the selection do all the talking: Gene Ammons "Hittin' The Jug" & "Chicago Breakdown", Sonny Stitt with Jack McDuff "Nother Fu'ther", Rusty Bryant "Red Eye Special" & "Soul Liberation", Willis Jackson "This'll Get To Ya" & "Tu'gether", Houston Person "Chains Of Love" & "Goodness", Johnny Griffin "Wade In The Water" and Stanley Turrentine "Walkin'".  © 1996-2015, Dusty Groove, Inc.

We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Prestige, 1972. Near Mint-
Supremely heavy work from organist Leon Spencer – one of his classic jazz funk sessions for Prestige Records, and a record that shows him opening up his sound a bit more than before! The album has Spencer working in a few different lineups – some with small groups that feature Melvin ... LP, Vinyl record album

Late Show – Recorded Live At Minton's Playhouse
Prestige, 1965. Very Good-
Lockjaw and Griff were a mighty team together – and their records from the 60s cook with incredible intensity. This classic album, part of a few that Prestige recorded live at Minton's in Harlem, is a very tasty session of jamming – featuring 4 long tracks, all with incredible two-tenor ... Prestige, 1968. Very Good-
One of the rarest albums ever from vibist Freddie McCoy – and that's saying a lot, given the rarity of most of his records! The set's got a cool sort of Eastern bent – as you might guess from the title and cover – a bit in an MPS jazz-meets-world mode, but with groovier soul jazz ... LP, Vinyl record album

Prestige, Early 60s/1974. Near Mint- 3LP Box
3 LP set from the 70's that brought together the live set that Dolphy recorded with Booker Little at the 5 Spot, which was floating around on separate discs before this. This set's got a handsome box around the discs, and brings the whole classic performance into focus – a task that's a ... LP, Vinyl record album

Blue Note, 1967. Very Good+ Gatefold
A much better record than you'd expect from the somewhat cheesy cover – one of Duke Pearson's funkiest sessions ever, and a hard swinging big band set with a great late 60s feel! Workin' On A Groovy Thing
World Pacific, 1969. Very Good Gatefold
Groove Holmes and Gerald Wilson – a wonderful combination on this late 60s session – in a style that's everything great about mainstream LA jazz at the time! Wilson really has a way with the charts on the session – and although the group is large, they've got a lean, clean sound ... LP, Vinyl record album

Round Midnight
Milestone, 1957/1982. Very Good 2LP Gatefold
Although Monk and Mulligan are about as unlikely a pair as you could ever imagine, this beautiful recording by them works amazingly well. Monk's off-kilter piano leaps around Mulligan's smooth baritone, creating a weird tapestry of sound held down by Wilbur Ware's great bass playing. Although the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Heavy funk from Reuben Wilson – one of the last great organ players to emerge from the 60s Hammond scene, and one of the hardest hitting cats at Blue Note during the funk years of the label! Groovin' With Jug
Pacific Jazz, 1961. Very Good+

Dial J J 5
Columbia, 1957. Very Good
One of JJ's best from the late 50s – a tightly crackling hardbop set, recorded very much in the manner of his classic JJ Inc album! The sound here is a bit more compact overall – with some shorter tracks that really allow Johnson to display his keen sense of economy on his horn, while ... LP, Vinyl record album
