One of Lucky Thompson's best American albums of the 50s – a killer set that features him and Oscar Pettiford working in both quintet and trio formats! The quintet sides add in Jimmy Cleveland on trombone, Don Abney on piano, and Osie Johnson on bass – all grooving in a tight sort of post-swing approach that lets in plenty of room for Lucky's tenor – but even better are the trio sides, which feature Lucky, Oscar, and the guitar of Skeeter Best – setting up a spare, drum-less sound that really lets Lucky open up like we've never heard before! Great stuff throughout – with actually more trio tracks than quintet ones – and titles include "NR #2", "Once There Was", "Good Luck", "Mister Man", and "Little Tenderfoot".
