Sambadi – Original Brazilian Groove Series Vol 1

LP (Item 808983) Favorite (France), 2012 — Condition: Near Mint-
A contemporary set, but one that sparkles with all the best brilliance of the 70s scene in Brazil – and that includes such heady company as Marcos Valle, Azymuth, and Joao Donato! As with all those artists at the time, Lucas Arruda has a groove that's strongly based on Fender Rhodes – warm keys that are underscored with some great acoustic percussion that gives the whole thing an earthy core at the bottom, and a vibe that's quite different than any American fusion of the time! The music is completely sublime throughout – very jazzy in its inflections, but also with a more freewheeling approach – as you'd hear on classic keys from Jose Roberto Bertrami. The set's got a bit of vocals, but really focuses on the keyboards – and titles include "Physis", "Rio Afternoon", "Batuque", "Alma Nova", "Sambadi", "Carnival", and a sweet cover of "Who's That Lady".  © 1996-2025, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(2022 reissue. Cover is bent a bit at the edges and front panel.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Astrud Gilberto

Shadow Of Your Smile
Verve, 1965. Very Good
One of Astrud Gilberto's greatest albums – and quite possibly our personal favorite! The record features beautifully understated arrangements by Joao Donato, Don Sebesky, and Claus Ogerman – and the instrumentation is a haunting mix of bossa rhythms with darker orchestrations that ... Doris Monteiro & Miltinho

Doris Miltinho e Charme
Odeon (Brazil), 1970. Very Good+
A great late bossa album – one of the EMI/Odeon gems from the lovely Doris Monteiro! Doris has always been one of our favorite late bossa singers, and she's very nicely paired here with Miltinho – in a sometimes duet/sometimes solo style that resembles that used on the Elis Regina/Jair ... Nana Caymmi & Cesar Camargo Mariano

Voz E Suor
EMI (Brazil), 1983. Very Good
A warm intimate set by these two legendary Brazilian talents – Nana Caymmi on vocals, and the legendary Cesar Camargo Mariano playing some wonderfully mellow keyboards. Mariano plays electric piano on most of the set, and the album's got a laidback quality that brings out the best in Nana ... LP, Vinyl record album

Azymuth

Flame
Milestone, 1984. Near Mint-
Warmly mellow grooves from Azymuth – a set that nicely lives up to the "Flame" in the title – and which shows the strengths the trio picked up during their years in the US! The sound here is round and soulful – a great fusion of the group's roots in the 70s Brazilian ... LP, Vinyl record album

Cristina Buarque

Prato E Faca
RCA (Brazil), 1976. Good
A nice little collection of classic samba tunes – re-recorded here by vocalist Cristina Buarque for her second album on RCA. The set showcases not just older tunes, but also compositions that were then current, but written by lesser-known talents who were being brought to light through ... LP, Vinyl record album

Gal Costa

Minha Voz
Polygram (Brazil), 1982. Near Mint-
Great stuff from Gal – even if the record is a lot smoother than her earlier work! The record's got a light jazzy style – like a lot of Gal's other work from the time – but this actually works quite well for her lovely voice, especially on the more intimate numbers. Titles ... Stan Getz with Joao Gilberto

Best Of Two Worlds
Columbia, 1976. Very Good+
A wonderful return to the sounds of Brazil for Stan Getz – a 70s album that reunites him with Joao Gilberto, but in a style that's somewhat different than the pair's older Verve recordings! The sound here is looser, freer – more in that breezy Brazilian mode that evolved out of the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Stan Getz & Joao Gilberto

Getz/Gilberto #2
Verve, 1964. Near Mint- Gatefold
A very different record than the first collaboration between Stan Getz & Joao Gilberto – but that's also one of the things that makes it great! The album's more of a split LP than a shared one – as side one features a live performance from the great mid 60s Stan Getz quartet that ... LP, Vinyl record album
