A surprisingly great little album – and a lost exotica relic of the late 50s! Crown was sort of a knock-off label that didn't always produce the best stuff, but this LP is one of their gems! Milt Raskin lays down ten tunes of prime exotica, with a feel that is like some of Les Baxter's best stuff, but that is also augmented by a lot of exotic instrumentation from Raskin's personal collection. Titles include "Koko Head", "Moon Festival", "Kapu", "Lehua", and "Mileka". (Cover has some wear and masking tape on the bottom seam.)  © 1996-2015, Dusty Groove, Inc.

We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

18th Century Jazz
Capitol, Late 50s. Very Good+
Goofy "18th Century" jazziness, played by a tight west coast studio sextet that features Shelly Mann, Milt Raskin, Harry Klee, and Jack Marshall on guitar. The tracks are jazz standards, but they're given a sort of plucked sound, and layed out with some sort of stepping classical grooves. ... LP, Vinyl record album

Exotica Vol 3
Liberty, 1959. Sealed
Sublime late 50s work from Martin Denny – his third album under the Exotica banner, and almost a deeper and weirder album than the other two! The sound here is extremely haunting – even more freed from conventional melody than the rest, and very fixated on the tonal possibilities that ... LP, Vinyl record album

A wonderful album from the young Irish singer/songwriter who went onto become one of the brightest lights in 70s pop! The record isn't his most famous, but it's got loads of great early songs that show O'Sullivan's brilliant talent for putting together lyrics that were simple and witty, yet never ... Very groovy instrumental work from the legendary Tony Hatch – served up here in a package that would help American audiences understand his role in the Petula Clark tune "Downtown"!
